Timid officer refuses to fight in Invictus!?
« on: August 06, 2023, 04:11:41 PM »

Hi!

So I have one timid officer in an Executor with advanced optics, large lasers and 2 large Dragonfire torpedoes. She is lvl 6 and has the usual skills but without gunnery implants. I've been using her this whole play through and she behaves like a dream. She outranges almost all other ships so she stay back and harasses them with the lasers and backs off if she is pushed or outnumbered.

Fast forward to today, I have 12mil in the bank and I decided to buy an Invictus. So I got a new officer and mentored her and she also has the timid personality type, but the problem is that she behaves like an absolute yellow bellied coward! I was expecting her to go into range, use her ship system, shoot then back off to vent like my Executor pilot, but instead she literally runs to the other side of the map where there is abso-bloody-lutely nothing and just keeps running away. She is literally like 5000 units from the nearest enemy and I see the orange line on the map of her running exactly away from them! WTF man? Why does the Executor cause one pilot to act reasonably and actually fight and kite enemies and the other to act like a ??? I don't even know what?

I thought it might be because I put the new large pillums on the Invictus, I figured maybe the AI considered itself a long range missile boat since those things have like 7k range, but when I took off all the missiles, the ship still tried to keep a 10k+ distance from the enemy! I don't get it!!! She has a converted hanger with 2 Xyphos for PD purposes but I can't imagine that that is causing this!

I'm about to reload to a save a couple of hours back before I bought this stupid Invictus and that awful pilot. I'm probably just going to get a second executor instead! Can anyone explain what the heck is going on here? What magic causes the AI to do this? Why does the Executor timid pilot actually do things and get kills and the Invictus is just a crybaby in the corner!?

Timid officers suck 99% of the time because they try to stay far far away from enemies.  Are you sure your Executor officer is timid? Sounds more like cautious personality.

I'm 100% certain she is timid, that's why I was so surprised that she performs so well. I thought timid officers were buffed in this patch or something. Could this be a bug/glitch, could the text say timid while she is actually cautious?

Last time I checked, timid officers behave pretty much same as if they had Avoid order on every single enemy ship. Which is too far even for dedicated carriers, and definitely useless on anything else.

As far as I know Timid officers will try to avoid ever being in range of enemy weapons. 1000 base range HIL + ITU + Advanced Optics on a capital(Executor) is almost as much range as you can get(you're only missing out on Gunnery Implants) so a Timid officer would still be able to deal damage even if completely avoiding enemy weapons simply because she outranges everything.

Invictus will have base 900 range weapons and then only the +25% passive bonus from Lidar Array so even a cruiser with ITU will outrange it. I assume the Timid officer AI does not take the extra range from activating Lidar Array into account, so yeah, a Timid officer in an Invictus will run away from pretty much anything.

But I'll echo what others said: Timid is the wrong personality 99% of the time. I guess you could put one on... a Condor? An Astral? Basically a pure carrier that is too slow to disengage easily?

I've played this current campaign for like 3 weeks now. I picked up the Executor within the first couple of days after doing the Sindrian mission chain because lmao free capitol and 500k. I just had a random timid officer I picked up from some derelict and she happened to have EWM, FM, missile spec, and field modulation. I figured I would just chuck her in there until I found someone better, but to my amazement and surprise after baby-sitting suicidal Radiant's for the past whole year almost, she behaves incredibly well! She actually keeps at her maximum range for the high intensity laser and I've even seen her pushing in to 80-90% of her max range to finish off fluxed out enemies. I was expecting to lose the executor a bunch from my previous experience with it, but I haven't lost it once in weeks. I took off blast doors from it because I just don't need it! She is absolutely awesome!

Hmm that would explain why she runs away like a little girl all the time. I'm using 4x Gauss cannons in the fixed frontal mounts. I didn't realize that the passive bonus from lidar was only 25%. I didn't think that that I needed gunnery implants on the Invictus pilot since I saw that the lidar extends range by like a whole lot. If the AI does not consider the lidar for it's own range calculation, and has a permanent "avoid" command on every enemy ship that would explain why the AI thinks everyone is out rangeing them.

Well case closed then, thanks for clearing this up! I'm going to reload to a previous save before I wasted 9 story points on this stupid pilot/ship combo. I am honestly unimpressed with the Invictus in general. I think I would rather pick up a second Executor for 10DP cheaper :l

I remember Alex talking in the blog post about how the LiDAR array ship system has a special flag that tells the ship to treat its range like it’s on. Probably need to check with that.
