What should the Historian ramble about?
« on: August 03, 2023, 05:25:44 AM »

I had the thought to add some more random infodumps to the Historian's ramblings- what should they be about?

I remember the historian talking about most major factions (or at least a topic central to said faction, I.E. Ludd for the Luddic Church), but I don't remember the historian saying anything about the Persean League. You do get to interact with the League a few times during the game's various missions, but I'm sure there's something the historian can add.

I think from time to time, the historian should give some interesting tidbits related to the player's future quests. Sort of like an easter-egg style foreshadowing. Nothing out of context, just stuff that the player would relate to, but that the historian has credible reason to know about.

Ruler(Presbiter Orbis? Or whatever) of the Luddic Church is not covered. Brother Cotton seems infamous enough to be mentioned. Hanan Pacha/Killa, imagine my surprise when I first visited during the Pilgrim's Path, I had absolutely no idea these two planets even had unique descriptions, much less about what happened there. How many kids does Andrada even have? Maybe a mention about fencing on Eventide to tie up with the Prince of Persea. Sensor Ghosts. And what's with the LC/LP's obsession with tea?

Scarcity?

League really needs more explanation. Is there really any equality between polities or is it Kazeron and friends? How does its military ever actually stand up to the Hegemony or Luddic Church? Extreme aggression?

I'd love to know more lore and history about the different manufacturers, like Fabrique Orbitale, Eridani-Utopia Terraforming, Ko Combine, Exodyne Biotech, Mbaye-Gogol and Domain Restricted. What were they like in the past, and what happened to them.

- Short stories about former planet governments (what happened to the indie planets during the collapse? So many planets, so many stories!)
- Hero tales about mythical captains and their ships achieving great feats (and their end to go with it)
- Heist stories - what about a short one about a thief stealing tech from the depths of culann?
- Crackpot rumors about historical events. Loke was a front for Hegemonial power projection gone wrong, TT is run by an AI core that took over and caused AI War 1 (that one's true though, totally)
- Old stories about early colonization efforts of the sector (How does a planet even get colonized, how do the people build out existences? Do they use grounded ships as hubs, or dedicated autofacs?)
- Stories about the life of people on planets in general (I'd love to know how the people of some of the more unknown locations eke out their existences. What do they live for, what do they do? Do they farm all day? Have their own beliefs? Maybe local heros that no one ever heard about?)
- Background lore about spacer life (Maybe the historian once served on a ship and can tell stories about the environment on spaceships. What goes on behind the scenes? We only ever see the outside of the onslaught, does it even have a mess hall? An did anyone ever use the tables to plug a hole in the bulkheads at one point, forcing the entire sector A crewmen to eat off the floor? Are there sectors to larger spaceships, do they have rivalries? There's this short story of a ship department establishing their own nation and declaring independence on a large ship, did that ever happen in the Sector?)

Edit - the other people had much better ideas. Such is life :P

How about a bit on how spacer culture has shifted over the years based on the major events of the sector. Maybe there was some tradition or superstition that popped up after the first AI War. (Or maybe the reverse, and it died off hard?)

There’s a lot of things that historian could talk about honestly. Other battlegroups and their status? Pre-Collapse lore, something Starsector always lacked? Elaboration on what happened between the 1st AI war and the Askonia Crisis(cause let’s be honest, that’s a century full of nothing)? Some answers on why some parts of the sector are the way they are? Far-flung tinfoil theories about the collapse? Little trivia about the factions and how they operate? Facts about the great domain vessels(sporeship, cryosleepers, gate haulers)? Background on Volturnian Lobsters? Alvyss’ hidden backstory?

Not to mention, it’s a good time to finally put in stone a lot of the tentative old lore, that’s basically been in pseudo-limbo since more and more of it has been silently retconned. Definitely not me silently petitioning for a new Accurate History Of The Sector.

Everyone asks what the historian can say but no one asks how is the historian.  :-[

What about some history on ship/weapon/fighter development? Reasons for development, methodology, screw-ups and design changes that came along with the whole process. Maybe even a bit on how it is like to use/service the weapons.
