How do i reduce explosion brightness ?

Playing the game with large monitor in a dark room, but whenever ships get destroyed the explosion brightness seems too much for my eyes. How do i reduce the explosion brightness but not the overall brightness ?

There is a toggle in the settings to disable the flashbang. "Disable explosion whiteout" or something like that.

Since 0.96 that setting option has been moved to the ingame options menu, for the record.
