Stacked salvage interaction
« on: June 21, 2023, 06:30:30 AM »

I only found this interaction because I wanted to save time salvaging multiple debris fields. I was in a system with multiple pirate fleets, and I just stayed in one location and took the fights as they came.

At the end of the battles, I sat amid a large, dense debris field. And then I activated my salvage ability, only to discover that my salvage opportunity was high risk, low reward, completely opposite my expectations. After taking crew and machinery losses, I was shocked to discover that my salvage got progressively BETTER with each successive attempt.

What probably happened: I fought the strongest fleets first, and then killed off the weaker stragglers at the end. The newest salvage got stacked on "top" and so the small fleet salvage got stuck at the top of the stack, while the lucrative salvage at the bottom was hidden below.

What I expected to happen as a player: All debris fields would combine into one, leading to a mega salvage opportunity.

What I did not like about this interaction: I had to suffer losses to get to the good salvage, with no way to "ignore" the top stack.

If the debris fields combining is impossible, my minimum expectation would be for salvage stacks to reorder from best to worst, not vice versa.

(Another valid suggestion but not a bug, moving to Suggestions!)

I do seem to remember merging multiple debris fields was... tricky, on the back end. They might have different salvage specials (at least theoretically) so it's an operation that's sometimes not possible without some loss of what would otherwise happen, etc.

I think you're right that the most recent field is getting picked up first; that makes sense.

Personally, my experiences suggest that it's first in first out, and that working through all the fleets probably is giving time for that first field to disperse.

I usually run into this when salvaging stations with defenders, where the difference between the debris from the station and that from the defending fleet is really obvious; it's also very obvious that it's the fleet that gets looted first. A very unpleasant surprise when I'm hitting a research station in a corona, say.

No need for merging when you can access multiple within radius.

Maybe it'd be simpler to update the salvage interaction to allow interacting with multiple fields in sequence, then, with some way to pick which ones to examine first?

In some respects that's not as 'clean' as just hitting the salvage button once and getting combined salvage output, but I could see, say, procgen spawning overlapping salvage fields that were both set to summon pirate fleets, which would need you to address them one at a time to get things 'right'...

I wouldn't worry about merging those debrie field, what I'd want is for the skill to let me salvage them all within one interaction dialog that is shown. So instead of picking (the top) field and showing interaction dialog to salvage it, to have a selection step first where I can pick which field to salvage:

Quote
You approach multiple salvage fields. Which field should your team focus on?

1. Large post combat field (1 day old) - temporary, combat related
2. Small debrie field - no age or source, permanent from world generation
3. Abort salvaging operation

After salvaging say 1, you return to this dialog. Option 1 is now disabled (grayed out), and you can still do 2nd field or abort. A nice touch would be replacing "abort" with "finish" if you had salvaged at least 1 field.

the thing is, merging debris fields is actually what would happen logically, if they are in the same location

what exactly is making it tricky with the "salvage specials"? could it be resolved by just only merging debris fields of similar origin, and maybe not merging "exploration" debris fields at all?
