[0.96a-RC10] Autofire settings changed by Autopilot
« on: July 13, 2023, 12:33:19 PM »

Not sure if this is intended, but I don't think so.
Basically, the autofire settings on a ship are often changed if one switches to autopilot, e.g., I usually have my MIRV and MLRS on autofire, when I set my ship to autopilot, this setting is often changed and when I get back into my ship.
Same with my ion pulsers on phase ships.

This is how it works! Turning autofire on and off is something that's done as part of controlling the ship, and so it's something the ship AI does. The weapon groups dialog just allows you to configure the starting state; this has no real effect on AI-controlled ships.

I don't mind that the AI does not follow my autofire settings, but when I get "back into the seat", I want the settings I had previously. Especially, since I set autopilot quite often by accident, e.g., by giving all units the command to kill one ship or when I change the command ship during battle.
So, the autofire settings under playercontrol should revert to the previous setting.

I would like a "Hard Autofire" setting, so that you can set a particular group to ALWAYS stay on autofire, regardless of whether the AI thinks it should have that group on autofire or not.

If you add a PD weapon (Flak Cannon, Mining Laser, etc) to the group, the ship AI won't touch it in almost any circumstance, effectively making it "Hard Autofire". The hack doesn't work with burst lasers.

Alex, if you're reading this, please don't fix the hack ;D

If this is intended/desirable behavior, why not give the player the ability to do this in the actual UI (lock autofire on), rather than having a hidden behavior that only experience players will know about?
