Mothership looked big when it was first released and Onslaught and Paragon were the largest ships the player can use.  Now that Invictus has arrived, the Mothership acting like a station while being the same size or slightly larger than Invictus looks silly.  Mothership should be retired as a station and become a borderline super-capital like Invictus that can fight like a normal ship.
I always assumed it's a station because its engines aren't functional anymore.

you don't have many ships with surveying equipment meaning that that's expensive
you don't have much in the way of supplies and crew, combined with the above that leads to almost no surveying while you are in the really early game
Honestly, I don't survey planets that don't have ruins around them or aren't colony candidates. Some class IV and V make sense to survey in pure monetary terms, but you can't know in advance which planets are they going to be.
you don't have the cargo space to carry any significant amount of loot
Now, I might be just unlucky, but I don't tend to find so many weapons, modspecs and blueprints to fill my storage space with just those. And besides those, eh, just throw out what overfills. Or come back for it later. It never posed an issue for me, and I avoid non-flagship industry skills as much as I can. It's probably even less of an issue with Bulk Transport.
That said, I don't fight motherships early on, either, because they tend to have Rampart escorts and Tempest cannot really take out more than 1 or 2 Ramparts at a time.

Well yeah, early game easy enemies are easy. Of expdrones, only Guardian isn't one.
except i never fight them in the early game since exploration is not really useful if you have such a small fleet

also you can encounter derelics *wayyyyyy* out in the fringes of the sector

derelicts are not early game, simply because you basically inevetably encounter way more dangerous threats before them

Well, the first thing i do in my playthroughs is to buy a dram and a small freighter like a tarsus/buffalo and then take those scan probes/derelict ships missions to get a few bucks, you may have a playstyle that avoids exploring but for anyone who does explore in early game (which is insanely easy since 1 dram lets you cover the entire map) the derelicts are absolutely an early game enemy since you end up scavenging a lot of probes.

Though i do think they could use some form of buff still, if you put so, a makeshift shield and a chaingun on a cerberus and you can take like an entire probe swarm by yourself, they shouldn't be THAT weak, and the mothership herself should really be stronger, currently its the weakest ''station'' in the whole game, imo it should be stronger than an orbital station but also weaker than a battlestation, that would be a nice challenge but still keep it relatively an early game threat.

Derilicts in general can definitely do with a buff. They're supposed to be an early game enemy but even moderately skilled players can breeze through them and newbies should be on easy mode and beat them.
