Combat freeze crash
« on: May 24, 2023, 01:09:05 AM »

Lately, I have had the game freeze during combat a couple of times and not on just one save. It is also weird how when I tab away and then try open it, it flashes between the game screen from a couple of minutes ago and the desktop.

Hmm - is this vanilla or with mods? If with mods: what you're describing sounds like it might be some kind of graphics driver issue, so turning off GraphicsLib (from its settings file) may help. If no mods: I'd suggest updating your graphics drivers, and also trying to run the game with "fullscreen" unchecked, but still at your full resolution (in case you aren't already).

Mostly vanilla, I only have console commands and magiclib at the moment. I'll try the not fullscreen idea.

It froze again after turning off full screen. How do I update graphics drivers?

I have updated Windows and Starsector and turned off fullscreen but it is still freezing and I've done the same fight like 5 times now and it always freezes part way through.

Could you clarify what you mean by "freeze"? Does the game hang, requiring to to kill it using task manager, or does it crash to desktop?

First thing is, since you've got a case where it freezes reliably: it's worth trying to turn off all mods to make sure it still happens then, just to narrow down the possibilities.

If that doesn't help:
Could you check in windows Event Viewer to see if there are any System/ or Application/ messages (warnings or errors) around the time of the freeze?

Are there any files named hs_err_pidXXXX.log in the game folder, or under starsector-core, where XXXX is a bunch of numbers, with a last-modified date matching the time of the freeze? If so, seeing the contents might be helpful.

Edit: I'm not sure updating windows would update the graphics driver. Generally what you'd probably want to do is go to the website of your graphics card's manufacturer, download the right driver from there, and install it.

One important thing is that in cases of problems, it can help to use this utility, DDU:
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
To make sure you cleanly uninstall your graphics drivers. Otherwise, corrupted files that were causing the issue may still remain after a driver update.

It hangs but I can hit the Windows button to go to the desktop and then right-click Starsectors icon to close it.
I ended up E burning away and haven't reliably reproduced it again yet.

It did happen to me again just now and Event Viewer said there was a warning event saying "Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

There were no error logs in starsector-core though.

I'll try the utility.

Edit: I used the utility and uninstalled the drivers but it still froze and while the last one was during a pursuit fight, this one was in the main fight before the pursuit. And the same event viewer system warning event was there and there are two application information events

Edit2: I turned off my two mods but it still hung and did so much earler in the battle than the last time.
It is also definitely a graphics issue as I can sometimes unpause it and hear the battle continue and hear my mouse go over if I press escape.
I don't know if this is a coincidence but it only hangs when I am pressing a lot of buttons.

There was no hs_err_pidXXXX.log files but the was a starsector.log file which I think is from when I tried to start Starsector before reinstalling the graphics drivers and it just immediately crashed. I would have copied it or attached it just in case but it's so big it crashed the webpage both ways.

There was another system warning and two application information from event viewer.

General: Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Re: Combat freeze crash

It sounds like the Intel Iris crash. https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=18624.0

I can confirm this issue still exists as of .96-rc10 and even with no mods installed, since I have the exact same thing. I can also pretty easily state that it is to do with Intel Iris graphics, since I have a Surface Book 3 which has both a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 and Intel Iris graphics, with the laptop disabling the former and switching to the latter when in low battery or tablet mode, or occasionally just as a bug I guess. When Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 is visible in Device Manager, Starsector runs without crashing, and when only Intel(R) Iris(R) Plus Graphics is visible, the game unpredictably freezes (especially probable seems to be when opening the fleet screen, but also completely unpredictably) matching the description provided by BaBosa: screen freeze, alt-tabbing out results in the game flashing between a black screen or one from minutes ago and desktop.

Unfortunately no other solution including ones presented in previous thread has worked for me other than checking that the device is using the GPU and not the Iris graphics before starting gameplay.

Edit to add: the Event Viewer message is "Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Also Iris driver version 30.0.101.3118 which is the latest, according to Windows Update. Because the crash happens infrequently and completely randomly it is easy to think it is associated with something, but with this setup I've mentioned I've come to assume it is just completely random since I'll be completely surprised by it happening sometimes when the device has switched to Iris graphics without my knowing; this is also the probable reason for many potential fixes that seem to work for a while and then don't in previous thread.

Ug bloody hell. So I can try mess around with settings to possibly fix the issue but no promises.
Luckily I'm using a loan laptop since my one is getting fixed and that one works fine. I might just not be able to play starsector until I get it back :'(
How do I check if it is using the GPU?

You probably don't, since most laptops will have either integrated graphics or a dedicated GPU with no choice, I think. Surface Book 3 is special because it has Intel Iris as a secondary GPU that it will use in some circumstances. You can check what is available under Device Manager in Display Adapters.
