Your One Ship
« on: March 20, 2023, 02:31:07 PM »

While I imagine this has been done before, it's not on the front page. As I am a mildly lazy human being, I'm going to just fire off a post here. So, what's your One Ship? What do I mean by One Ship? Well, I'm glad you asked (even if you didn't). Your One Ship is the ship you'll always go for. That, for whatever reason, you grab as soon as you can get it. Does it have 3, 4, 5 D-mods? Maybe. But it's your One Ship so dang it you're taking it and never letting go until you can get a better one, restore it, or it blows up so completely that no amount of story points can bring it back. And maybe you even decide to reload so as not to lose it. So I want to know what it is! Whether it's the super-capital from the mod no one has heard about to the Atlas freighter to even the legendary vroom-vroom of cheapness: the Kite.

For me, mine is the not-so-humble Scarab Heavy Frigate. The big draw? It can be outfitted to be useful in almost any situation. With its superb Temporal Shell giving it the ability to control any engagement, the Scarab can dance into and out of battles. Winning engagements against multiple similar sized opponents. Speedy enough to grab objectives, durable enough to hold them. Front load it with weapons, and it shreds shields then pummels the remaining armor. But, if I don't need or want a hunter, I can refit its broad weapon placements to become an escort/support. LR PDs and a few missiles sees it shielding cruisers, carriers, and capitals. Of course, one could that about most any vessel. However, what makes the Scarab more unique i this returns to how Temporal Shell can be applied anywhere rather than feel limited. For example, the Wolf is pretty darn versatile in its weapon options as well. However, I feel that its teleport ability is significantly better when not chained to escort detail. The Scarab's ability is more generally applicable. Shooting and moving faster to make the most use of its weapons and defenses. Lastly, the Scarab is a ship that is handled fairly well by the AI. Being, when I had a couple in my fleet, one of the ships that rarely if ever showed up on the recovery screen. The immense draw of this is, naturally, the fact that you don't need to baby it. Send it out and it will get the job done while you, as the player, can fly the vessels that need the players touch to reach their true potential. Or fly the Scarab anyway and have fun spinning it like a top spewing lasers in every direction.

So what's yours!

When I started playing, Tempest because it's the coolest. A high speed attack frigate with defensive drones is a rare concept. Nowadays it's the Omen; not quite as cool, but it brings more utility while still being able to duel enemy frigates.

The Sunder.

To the surprise of no one.  :D

For me, it depends on what kind of run I’m doing. If it’s primarily Low Tech, I’ll haul around a Legion even in the early game if I can find one (preferably XIV). It can be a bit of a fleet unto itself. For Midline, I can’t pass up a Champion. They feel rarer than Eagles and they very versatile. For High Tech, the Aurora and Odyssey are S-tier. The Odyssey has the edge because it is easily twice as powerful but only 50% DP. It is also very fast and doesn’t slow a cruiser fleet down.

Ultimately, I think the Odyssey is The One but the Aurora is right there.

I like the legion. I like battlecarriers in general and this one has some sentimental value attached to it.
Lately however i feel like i want to spice things up and try something new. Patiently waiting for the next update before going for a new run though...

In vanilla it's ALWAYS the Eradicator. I can personally use that ship to absolutely melt any high-tech ships I run into. Modded? So far I'm a major fan of the Skysplitter. Think of it as a Sunder, except a battlecruiser with excellent flux, armor, speed, and auxiliary weaponry mounts.

Dominator.
Used it so much over the years that I've since decided to play with conduct rules & avoid it, just so I fly something else for a change.

For my AI buddies - Omen.

The Enforcer.

It's fairly easy to get, has lots of decent ways to kit it out, and is a tough customer with good survivability for early-midgame fleets. Strangely enough not my favourite, I usually don't pilot it (unless I'm station-sniping with Reapers+expanded racks), but I have trouble remembering a single game where I didn't have 2-3 as the core of my fleet. Oh, and it has lots of variants too!

I had to think really hard because I genuinely often switch up my fleet composition so it doesn't become stale. So I guess one ship that somewhat stands out is the good ol' Hammerhead. Nothing better than it to get an early game power spike while also being a generally solid ship that I can also give to AI if I want to pilot something else. Yeah there's better ships to dominate early game enemies but this is just a nice, cheap and realiable option that gets to stay in my fleet for a while.

It kind of changes during a playthrough, depending on my goals and where I'm at. For the flagship, I start with SO Hammerhead. That takes me through much of the early-mid game. Then once I get some Cryoblasters it becomes the SO Medusa with dual Cryoblasters. For both of these, the battles are very much arcade-style, i.e. constantly maneuvering back and forth, poking at weak spots in the enemy fleet, etc.

Late game it becomes Onslaught XIV, with Proximity Charge Launchers. Basically run into the middle of the fleet and kill everything. At this point it becomes more strategic instead of arcade so I end up running battles at 2x speed (also, the Onslaught is slow, heh).

For the rest of the fleet, early on, I go for LP Brawler which takes me through faction fleets and into single Ordos. After that, there's a lot that I could go for, but typically I use mostly cruisers and capitals. I just envelop the enemy fleet at the beginning by spreading my fleet out into a line, and then they gradually fight toward the enemy spawn point, thus preventing ships from getting through.

As for which cruisers, Gryphons are easily the most overpowered (and thus easiest), but Apogees, Eradicators, Champions and surprisingly, the Eradicator (P) work pretty well under AI control. For sheer efficiency though, Conquests seem to be pretty good. For double Ordos, pretty much the fastest farming fleet I've found is flagship Onslaught XIV up the middle, with 2 Conquests on each side. That's only 200 DP against 240 DP (battle size 400) but it can handle it no problem and I don't have to worry about capturing points, since with BotB I can deploy all of that at the beginning. It's also a small enough fleet XP-wise that I can get +500% XP bonus out of it against double Ordos. Usually takes around 5 minutes per fight.

Attached is a screenshot of this setup, with Conquests 1 and 2 having their weapons on the right, and Conquests 3 and 4 having their weapons on the left. "Right sided" Conquests naturally drift to the left of the map as they fight, while "left sided" Conquests (and Odysseys) naturally drift to the right of the map as they fight, so I let them go to either side and I fight up the middle and clean up. You can see that the Conquests can fire their Squalls/Mjolnirs/HVDs/Harpoons from outside enemy range, so they don't take much damage, and the enemy ships that make it through are going to be no match for me. So I just need to press R on new target every so often and burn drive forward to make sure I have something to hit.

For the current release, Ziggurat.  It is practically Star Control 2's Vindicator in Starsector.  There is only one in the game, and it cannot be replaced.  It is also overpowered despite its weaknesses (-50% CR after a fight and slow recovery are brutal).  The only problem with it is I cannot get into fights or (blueprint) raids in core without going to war, but most fights I get into are bounties or Ordos out in the fringe.

In previous releases, I used Medusa, Hyperion, Odyssey, Onslaught, and Paragon as flagships of choice.

Lasher and Wolf one is an attack frigate that can be equiped to fill other role and AAF make it deadly to other frigate and destroyer(he eat sunderer for breakfast) and can bring presure or damages to target that cant punish it, the other is a the most annoying opportunist of the sector, able to stay alive way above its weight class and can bring support beam or emp where its needed, mostly a support/pressure ship but can be made into a decent IR laser boat with a  good commander inside...

Both are easy to get cheap to use and maintain and have stats and wweapon slot that complement their ship module/skill

I would like to enjoy the eagle for I like the design of this HeavyCruisergunboat design but its starved in OP have too many weapon slots  and still often barely bring more than a champion would do with half as many guns and the  manuverability (or lack of) doesnt allow it to do anything well except long range sniper somthing other cruiser can do better.

For me... I'd have to go with the Tempest. Unless I specifically decide "I'm doing a challenge run with no Tempests", then I will get one or two of them as soon as I can... and I'll keep them all the way through endgame.

Do I pilot them myself? Generally, no. But I find that a properly-outfitted Tempest is highly survivable under AI control (extended shields, a small PD weapon, and max or near-max capacitors are key) and capable of contributing against all but the most exotic opponents. Also, burn 11 enables pursuit options against basically anything, which can be situationally nice, too.

For some reason I have always ended up using the Heron, even if only as a sideboard ship for sieging. It's surprisingly practical for a pure carrier with its 8 burn and relatively high speed. They work wonders as glass cannons even outside of siege scenarios, granted you pair them with a strong frontline. Wouldn't recommend them against the [REDACTED] or Pathers, though.
