Fleet Size Cap Increase

I know there is already a thread addressing this, but it appears to be out of date or incorrect.

I am wondering if there is a way to increase the cap for fleet size by editing the config files for the game. There do not seems to be any mods that simply let you adjust the numerical value for the cap of ships in fleet, and I can only assume this is because you wouldn't need a mod to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love the game :)

The instructions in the other thread were correct, although a bit abridged.  You need to look inside the settings.json file, located in starsector-core/data/config/ directory, for the constant "maxsShipsInFleet".  You can open the json files with any text editor.  All settings intended to be easy to change outside of the menu are located in that file.

Question. Would this also affect non-player fleets as well?

Only if you edit "maxShipsInAIFleet"

I wish there were much more flexibility in fleet sizes without having to resort to mods. It seems to me that limiting by DP would make more sense than limiting by ship count, if we need a size limit at all. Running bigger fleets is already more expensive, after all.

Yeah, it means you can't have a one-size-fits-all fleet that does absolutely everything... but a) is that necessarily the worst thing, if the player wants to pay for all the fuel and supplies? and b), it pretty strongly encourages tall vs. wide fleets. There are of course a lot of other design factors in Starsector that encourage wide fleets, but then why the weird tension with a hard fleet size cap? Ditch it and you wouldn't have to have so many character skills, hullmods, and DP/OP pricing schemes trying to solve a problem that's created by the size cap in the first place.
