I always feel that I shouldn't attack the Independents, because they're like me. But in the end, I'm usually forced to do so, since they have Eagles and Falcons, and I don't have the money to buy these...

I would say go for it. Right now, there is no benefit to being anyone's friends,
as well as the save files being incompatible when we do get that option.
I, too, use to not attack the independents until I realized one thing:
THEY HAVE ALL THE GOOD SHIPS.
Once you have a powerful enough fleet, you can take them out easily and get the good ships.

There's definitely a benefit to being friends with either Tri-Tachyon or the Hegemony--having a station you can shop and refit at without having the run the gauntlet of the defence fleets on the way in!

You can just use the abandoned station for that.

The better question is; why shouldn't I attack the independents  ;)

To that question... I have no answer  ;D

If it moves, kill it.

I've made everyone angry, in this order (of game progression):
Pirates>Independents>Tri-Tachyon>Hegemony

You can't shop there, can you? You might be able to refit, but selling excess stuff, not so much!

Why sell anything? Just horde everything.  ;D Only thing you could consider selling is fuel. You can get credits just by fighting.

Depends, if you're fielding a good portion of your army as fighters (for me, I field about 67% of my fleet as mixed fighters, thunders, warthogs and a xyphos) then you'd want to sell of a fair few weapons to make sure you have room for more supplies.

I never attack the independents. I have no interest in being a pirate. But bloodying the noses of the people already being jerks is no problem for me.

Yes, there's really no benefit to not attacking them. There are often small or large merchant convoys ripe for the picking. In addition, there can be lone destroyers or cruisers floating around and very easy to take out.
