Anything that has farmland is pretty easy to maintain and is likely to produce reasonable profits. And no one sends expeditions to stop farmers. So a farm world is relatively easy to build up in population because, so long as you only have farming. You only need to worry about pirates and not much else.

What goomin said. Farmland, low hazard. Mining isn't bad either but way more people will raid you to shut it down. Don't bother with defenses, don't turn on free port and don't install AI cores, all cost you more than they earn in the long run. If a raid happens, don't be in the system or the pirates will gank you with armada doomstacks.

Once you want to try building heavy industry and stuff, refining or fuel production, that's when you can think about defending your space.

Laying low for passive population growth is great.

Or. You can dump hundreds of thousands of credits into a no-atmosphere industrial freeport hell-forge. Stack it with AI cores and looted domain tech, then frantically start upgrading defenses as fleets from every tinpot dictatorship in the Sector come pouring in to quash the upstart.

You'll be a few million credits in the hole before it starts stabilizing into something self-sustaining, and multiple cycles from seeing a return on investment. It's real fun though! Especially if you can get a commission that pays for killing invaders

Your colonies will be munching away on your hard-earned income for quite a while, so if you are barely managing to break even with just your fleet, your colonies will bleed you dry. So tailor your fleet to be flexible and relatively low maintenance before setting up your first colonies. I'd suggest 1 capital at most (Odyssey), 3-5 cruisers (Apogees with some converted hangars, maybe a heron or two), 4-6 destroyers (a mix of Hammerheads and Enforcers is rather decent, possibly a Sunder too) and the rest frigates (whatever you can find for a low cost).

Apart from that, do a bit of exploration beforehand and see if you can find a system where you have 3-4 planets covering everything relevant:
  • a barren world with 150% hazard
  • a habitable world with decent food and organics
  • any kind of world with a good supply of volatiles
Odds are if you have these three ores are already available on one of them in sufficient quantity.
