Classification changes to fighters and ships
« on: November 03, 2022, 08:25:48 AM »

Problem one: "Fighter" currently can mean either "Any small ship" or "Midweight small ships designed to escort bombers or engage directly." This means that bombers are Fighters but not fighters, as it were. (I spent a lot of time wondering if the skill bonuses to fighters applied to interceptors and bombers...)

Problem two: Ships come in distinct size categories of Frigate-Destroyer-Cruiser-Capital, but the ship type may or may not include that. This is is annoying when you get a new ship that the game describes as a "Phase Transport" or "Light Carrier" but don't know whether it qualifies for wolfpack or whatever. Would be nice if "Hull Size" could be added to the big info screen alongside max burn speed and whatnot.

Anything that comes from an LPC is a fighter, regardless of its role or armament.
I'm not sure if this is explicitly stated anywhere, but if it isn't it might be useful for it to be.

Ship sizes definitely don't have any indication of which ships are in which class, and it would be helpful if they did.
Mostly I manage this through familiarity, which is not really an option for new players.
For ships I'm not familiar with it comes down to size - how big something looks. And if that's not sufficient, how much certain hull mods cost to fit.
Neither are great options for newer players.

Something on the refit screen might be helpful.

And the icon with the number could then be repeated elsewhere as needed. 1 being Frigates, 2 Destroyers, 3 Cruisers and 4 Capitals.
May also be worth giving the icons for each class thier own colour, so text can be dispensed with entirely if it needs to be displayed small.

It would help if ship storage was divided into ship classes like in early Starfarer releases.  With so many ships the player can store, having tabs by size again would be useful.

Eh, it's not really important enough to get its own icon like that. Just add it to the stat card, next to the deployment cost. That one can also be checked before you buy the ship, which is what new players need ("will it work with frigate skills?" etc).

What count as a fighter doesnt realy cause any problems but it is true that it can be misleading, so it would be better to clear that up.
Hull type should be added to the statcard.

...you mean the game at some point HAD storage tabs but they were removed? Why in the Ludd's good name would they do that?

In early releases, when Starsector was named Starfarer, markets and storage had (I think) four tabs, one for frigates, one for destroyers, one for cruisers, and one for capitals.  Some time later, it was merged into a single page.

When player collects dozens or more than a hundred ships, it is a pain navigating a single page looking for ships.  Why it was changed into a single page, I do not know.

vanilla ship count goes up to 30, and i'd say it's sufficient for that. If ship numbers are small then distinct tabs would just add more time needed to sort out your stuff and reduce visibility over how your fleet looks as a whole

I suppose some sort of QoL improvement can be made with color-coded frames and/or fonts. It might not even need a legend, since the association between color and size might come to the player naturally.

I think ideally any change to differentiate them should rely on more than just colour, for the sake of colourblind people.
