Call it "fighter targeting override" or something along those lines. The xyphos have an engagement range of 0 because they rely on a direct targeting feed from the carrier, so this hullmod would rip out the targeting unit on any fighter produced and replace it with an advanced point defense AI.

I've tried and seen other people try to use fighters as pd for a ship, but then realize you can't because the AI always sends it to attack or escort another ship. This would not only let you do that, but ipdai would open up the option to fighters even without pd weapons like the lux with their ir pulse lasers.

I doubt it would be an auto-pick with xyphos either, because you would be paying for an entire hullmod to get ipdai on 2 burst pds.

Another thing that limits fighters, aside from AI sending them, is durability.  They are more fragile than Pods or Xyphos.  Give them damage resistance or more armor/hp too if frozen as support.

As for hullmod, carriers do not have excess OP to spare unless they use s-mods to get more OP.  And the carriers that want this hullmod will probably be battlecarriers, who already struggle getting fighters/weapons of sufficient quality and ITU and flux stats with their modest (or low in case of Condor, Heron, and maybe Astral) OP totals.

Probably be better if there were few more dedicated support fighters just so that low OP carriers can use them without sacrificing everything else.

If we had a medium option support fighter - not as expensie as xyphos but better than mining pods - hten picking converted hangar and putting this in would be a no brainer.
Converted hangar + xyphos is already a really strong choice for most ship.

Is Xyphos strong because of Ion Beams or Burst PD?  I am guessing it is mainly because of Ion Beams.  While paying 18 OP for both Ion Beams and Burst PD is okay, paying 18 OP when I only want the PD weapon is lame.

Mining Pods' lasers are too weak for PD.  Pods are mostly useful for using their bodies to block bullets and missiles, which is not very reliable.

Using Converted Hangar for fighters, especially Xyphos, is very expensive.  It is mostly useful for ships that cannot get a lot of guns/PD on the ship itself (either because lack of mounts or working around AI behavior).  And if the player does not have carrier skills, the debuffs from Converted Hangar cause other fighters drop like flies and rate drops to 30% fast.

More support fighters would be great for warships with proper fighter bays, especially Odyssey and Legion, who are slightly OP starved.

As for the hullmod suggestion, probably the only fighter it would work decently is Broadswords because they are not too expensive, durable, and replacement is not too slow.  They are one of the few fighters that work decently on no Leadership builds.  Maybe Warthogs too, since their weaknesses of slow speed and low range are not a problem when bound to a ship.
