Hi all, just trying to figure out what happened - not sure if it was a bug (game didn't crash) or a quest, but I suddenly lost all my ships and most of my money.

tl;dr I completed a delivery mission in Nachiketa, and once I left the planet I got a message box in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to read what it said as I either accidentally double clicked while leaving the planet or pressed a space bar (out of habit to pause the game),
which immediately closed that message box. Then I've got teleported next to Agreus in Arcadia System with two little ship and 300k (lost ships and cargo worth about 2-3kk).

It's super annoying, as I lost a lot of progress without any explanation! I tried to do the same steps from the previous save, but I couldn't reproduce it...
Can someone help me soothe my anger and try to figure out WTF happened? Please :) It really destroy immersion of that playthrough :(

It all started on Cycle 207, Month 2, Day 21 (last save).
I just finished raiding a warehouse (Disrupt Competitor) on Asher in Canaan Star System per contract.
At the time I had 860k in cash, a fleet of 27 ships that's about 202 DP worth and a lot of cargo to trade.
Me and my crew were trying our best to complete all the tasks on time.
The order to fly to Hybrasil system was given to pick up the food that needed to be delivered to Nachiketa in Naraka system.
On the way I've got informed of some really good deals in the Askonia Star System, naturally we did stop by, and indeed, that was a really good decision!
With even more money and supplies (but less time for the tasks) we finally picked 5400 boxes of food at Hybrasil and we set a course for the Nachiketa.
While keeping in mind that we have another important mission with a deadline approaching, we've unboxed all the food on the double,
did even more profitable transactions, and decided to leave for the last mission. But then, the unfortunate day has come...

Cycle 207, Month 3, Day 11 - I just woke up in a little ship, next to the Agreus planet. Was I really a wealthy captain, with a huge fleet and almost infinite resources?
Did I just have the most realistic dream even? Or did someone or something disrupt neurons in my brain? Everything seemed so real, but no matter how hard I try,
I can't remember a thing about that day. I decided to spend all my credits left and organise a search party, hire the best  investigators and prosecutors I could find.
But all my ships were gone, not a single trace of my former wealth... Is there any hope to get at least a fraction of it back? Or may I going senile?
I do have a hope someone will prove me it wasn't just in my head, or I will really have to consider retiring. With almost no money left at this point, I can forget about
finding a quiet place to settle. The only option left to put my mind at ease is to go to Eochu Bres and get as much drugs as I can afford and try to forget all of this,
and stay from star ships as far as I can...

PS Some of the (important) messages in the game are way too easy to close without any possibility of re-reading them elsewhere :( is there a way to find it somewhere?
PS2 I did not die (to my knowledge), I did not run of supply, CR, money, etc.
PS3 Let me know if you need any more context, the game is at 0.95.1a-RC6 with some utility mods. I played earlier versions and never seen anything like that.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally pause your repairs or run out of supplies, then lost all your ships to accidents?

Yes, I'm absolutely sure :) I had money, supplies, fuel, all my ships at 85% CR and I'm using a mod that screams at me when I'm low on supplies.

Literally I just came in, handed over the food/mission and (now that I think of) I believe I clicked on "e", "contacts", top icon,
handed over one more quest to Alviss Sebestyen (still inside menu) and I left the Nachiketa station menu.
I saw the planet, but before I did anything, a window popped up and I think I pressed spacebar to pause the game,
but it just closed the window and it teleported me next to Agreus without my old ships or cargo, as if I lost (BTW I wasn't fighting anyone).

This is my first play-through using the newest version, before I was on 0.95a-RC15 and before that, some older versions.
I can't think of any mechanics I faced so far in the previous versions that would cause this, hence I'm starting to wonder if it could be some weird bug.
Any other ideas?

I'm trying my best to not save-scum, but if I can randomly loose everything, it will bring my bad habit of using "save a copy" instead of normal "save" ;/

You won't run out of supplies if you forget to turn repairs back on. Your ships will be losing CR until they get critically damaged. Unfortunately the game only warns you at the beginning of the process, when their CR gets lower than optimal, and then at the end, when a 0% CR ship gets destroyed as a result. Are you sure this couldn't happen to you? You could have misclicked in the Fleet tab for instance.

How very weird, I've never heard of this happening! If what others have asked didn't happen, that sounds like a horribly nasty bug. Could you give a complete mod list so that if this happens again we can compare/contrast them?

If you install Console Commands you can give yourself back the ships/credits you lost at least.

I use a mod that shows bright red all the time when you run out of supplies, plus if that would really happen, one cannot
miss it really - game will keep opening in the middle of the screen a "Accident Report" every few days - tested :)
I loaded my old save, then I did a test w/o any supplies and with low crew - the fleet was fine for more than 4 months.
I didn't fight with anyone during the run while "strange reset" happened, and I did not play around hazardous environments.

The only unusual thing I remember doing at the time was playing with Contacts in the "Intel" tab.
Not sure if I missed it, was added recently or is this from a mod, but I just only discovered there was a "call" button.
I did try playing with that button again (e.g. to see if I can deliver rescued people by the phone :) w/o visiting the planet),
but it did not trigger the reset.

If that was a quest/mission by any chance (I try to not skip any story and read all texts) then it would be too punishing
(loosing all ships and cargo), and there are probably a lot people skipping the text. So it more seems like some ugly bug.
I just wish I knew how to reproduce it.

Hmm yeah, this definitely looks like a bug. I'm not sure how it could happen in vanilla; that dialog would only show up if the player fleet has no human-pilotable ships (i.e. no valid flagship). My best guess would be a bug in a mod somewhere clearing out the player fleet, but tracking down exactly what happened would be pretty tricky.

Stelnet clears your fleet for the duration of a contact call. If the dialog exits in an 'abnormal' way (like when I tried to progress the Galatia Academy quest once by calling Arroyo remotely) it might not give you your fleet back, causing Starsector to respawn you with a new fleet. Is that what happened?

Ok, that totally make sense now. Still seems like a nasty bug, but at least knowing when it may happen can put my mind at ease.
I was a bit reluctant to use the "call" button at first (as it seemed ok to call for jobs, but not so much for delivering items back).
But as curious as I am, I wanted to see what will happen if I end a mission remotely, where I have to deliver something back.
And I paid price for it - though doing the same again didn't trigger it, banzai the edge case bugs!

I missed the fact that that was mod mechanic, I thought it was added in the newer vanilla, sorry about confusion and thank you all for the help!

After months of investigation for the missing fleet and proof that it all wasn't just a dream, when the hope felt all lost.
In a remote location bar, far from sober, the (former) captain Volt was greeted by three space captains: Thaago, Alex and Histidine.
They brought the proof, that there were more people like him. "So it wasn't a dream, huh?", he said, "it's time to find out who did it,
and give them well-deserved payback!" he screamed, and then followed up with an order of "Orbital Bombardments" for everyone
at the bar. "I may have lost my fleet, cargo and money, but thanks to you guys my motivation has come back", he downed the drink,
"time to get my rusty Wolf back to work, to get my former glory. Expect an invitation for another "Orbital Bombardment" round, once I've got an Atlas back!".

I'd be very interested in your save (prior to delivering it) and the way you delivered it.

Stelnet holds a copy of your fleet / inventory and clears it during the Remote Call. After you terminate the call, the copy is restored back to you, so from end-user experience nothing should have changed.

What is your Stelnet version? There was a nasty bug that wasn't restoring properly a few versions back, but by now you should be on the latest.

Had a break from Starsector, but now I've found something - it seems that the problem is caused by recursion of the intel tab.

Although I did once again loose my fleet, I had a save before playing with the "call" buttons. Not sure exactly what I did that time,
but it must be related to the other problem, that I know how to reproduce:
* Load a game, go to intel;
* Select contacts tab, open contacts, call someone, ask for work, select one with a map, click on "show intel";
* Open contacts in the contact tab again, call someone, press "show intel" again and close it (on the top right)
  (FWIW the same person was showing me different set of missions this time);
* Decline mission and go back to when you can close it again (on the top right) - now you will be stuck in the dialog.

Hope this helps.

Got it, that helps a lot. Still need a save with a contact that offers such a mission, but that shouldn't be too difficult to prep.
