I'd like for mods to be able to create new ship styles - including engines (visuals/sounds), shields (visuals/sounds) and explosions (sounds) in a non-conflicting way.

Yeah, there's really no reason not to expose this. It just started out not exposed, and I haven't had time to go through the code and make little things like that external. Going to have to do a "make little things that ought to have been moddable in the first place actually moddable" pass at some point.
The tricky part is working that in between adding new features
