Ok general idea, there is auto generated captains with a specialized fleet (painted ships maybe with there own built in guns). You can fight them as bounties or just as enemy faction fleets. This would be to make the game feel more alive. As an added bonus the ability to customize and paint your ships would be really sweet.

would be sweet if ships became more personal instead of just dumping them for the next best ship.

So, basically IBB/HVB in vanilla? Good idea, although it runs into the same potential problem - the player would eventually accumulate so many custom ships they could fill their entire fleet with them.

Or something about 20 prescripted captains well known in sector. As npc's, we can meet them in every game we start. They can join factions or do bounties or exploration, or trying to sell they ship in the bar. We can defeat them, get quest from them or about them, rescue them from jail, from failed exploration mission. In rare occasion we can recruit them. They cannot die by default, only in rare occasion. They had named ships, not unique, just named and fitted to they skills. They can hold some lore and they own stories.

Idea is to create some personalities, we can met and remember.

If those non-mobile officers didn't count towards the officer limit....

If those non-mobile officers didn't count towards the officer limit....
that would let you have a fleet of 30 officers.

that would let you have a fleet of 30 officers.
Officers who's ship types you don't control, could be a capital all the way down to a frigate, and likely wouldn't count for deployment purposes (like mercenaries).

Sounds fine to me.

Yes. After the contract runs out they go back to doing whatever they were doing and you can hire the same guy again later. Your relationship number with each unique captain would affect how they talk to you and the price of their service. When you run into them again by accident you may fondly recall the last battle where you fought side by side with them. That'd make the sector feel far more alive than if they became a permanent part of your fleet, and it would be easier to balance.
