With the way I play, I finish Red Planet early and claim Radiant as my first capital.
When I start a game, before I play a seed for real, I explore the entire sector and examine all the systems for a good colony system. Several reloads later after I explored enough, if I do not find a good enough system to colonize or (rarely) the seed has no red systems for Ordos farming, I abandon the seed and try another until I find one with a good enough system to colonize. It takes about an hour or so to determine if the seed has a system I want to colonize, but it beats playing normally for at least a day only to discover the seed has crappy planets and I want to restart because I do not want to continue playing a game I have no fun with. Along the way, I find the Red Planet on my own, and make a note of its location. I return as soon as I get the Automated Ships skill. For me, the main loot of Red Planet is recovering the Radiant (without fighting an Ordos in a red system).
Until endgame, I visit bars frequently to look for deals (among the glut of schmuck bait missions), like the base commander offer pristine ships for sale below market price, among others. I see the spacer but do not bother with him because I already know where the planet is thanks to pre-game exploration.
