I'm looking for something I can slap an ECCM Package onto and just use as an artillery platform for my smaller ships.  Does that exist here, or are carriers with bomber squadrons the only ships that fill that role?

Have you tried the Gryphon?

Pirate Falcon is the classic missile truck, with 4x medium mounts. Also fast, so if it's carrying torpedoes, they can come from fun angles. There's the Gryphon, 1x large, 2x medium, 3x small, which comes with built-in Expanded Missile Racks and can reload all its launchers once as its special ability; it's about as pure missiles as they come.

The Apogee and the Atlas II have a bit more going on than their large missile mounts, but they both have the virtue of being DP cheap. They're also slow, so they need the support.

If you're looking for an artillery battleship I recommend the Atlas Mk. II. It only costs 24 DP, very low for a capital class, and it spits out a ton of firepower. It also has weak defenses so it's the kind of ship you want firing from a long range anyway.

2x Gauss Cannons, 2x Squalls, ITU and Expanded Missile Racks. It will be able to fire from across the sector and bring down shields in a heartbeat, then your frontline ships can close in for the kill.

Also, in the early game at least... Buffalo Mk II. Its a terrible ship that cheaply spams missiles and can mount a converted hangar Talon too to cheaply spam fighters. A makeshift shield increases its survivability by a bunch.

Its not necessarily a good idea to use BMII's, but they do spew missiles on the cheap!

I can think of circumstances where I'd want one in the backline.

I also wouldn't exactly be sad if it got blown up, either.

Mules are also a neat alternative to BuffyIIs, if they're a bit too fragile for your tastes.
They have 1 less missile slot and cost more to deploy, but have more speed (jets rule), more survivability, have enough OP to still be modded into trashcarriers, and on top of that can carry stuff.
Also, Mule's missiles point forwards & it's medium is turreted so it can use all the unguided stuff BII would struggle with.

Ah right, the mule with the universal forward mount is a great choice for this! They also have much better campaign stats (quite useful as freighters). I should try more of these...

When you say to use a Mule, do you mean the pirate variant, or the default one?

IIRC the pirate one is better? A universal mount and shielded cargo holds as free upgrades. I don't think it pays an OP penalty or anything from them.

Buffalo mkII has a unique advantage over all other missile boats - it's always panicking. It will be much less conservative with its ammo and launch everything at first opportunity.

Edit: upon checking, it does NOT have the always_panic tag anymore, only pather ships do. Undocumented stealth nerfs??!

Doesn't matter any more. Both can fit medium missiles now.

Interesting!

Also I've had fun loading up the mid slots of a Legion with reapers.

I've been happy using dual Cyclone Reaper Launchers on a Legion XIV to bully Radiants.

But that's really not a missile support ship for the rest of your fleet, that's a very heavy hammer.
