Building derelict sidequest

Just had a thought for a fairly straightforwards sidequest that the player could receive after they control a colony with heavy industry and have the autonomous ships skill.  Where the player is contacted by an engineer on their main delivery colony, after making contact with them the player is given the chance to complete a set of tasks that culminate in their faction gaining the ability to build derelict ships using their faction's heavy industry.  They can also use derelicts in faction fleets, if they want to.  Assuming of course that they do not respect out of autonomous ships.

Actually, to add to this I think it would be cool if all of the end game skills had potential faction customization options tied to them and a sidequest.  You can only have one at a time, but each would add bonuses to all faction made ships and let you do something special.  Say missile specialization gave +33% ammo capacity to all small missile slots and gave a special frontier missile set to build.  Autonomous ships added the aforementioned ability to build autonomous ships and gave all faction made ships -10% skeleton crew required.
