I love this game, but when the patches come out, it SUCKS to lose everything and be reduced to "pink bunny rabbit" status again.

I know that old saves don't carry over, but why do you have to give us such a terrible start? almost no credits, and a selection of ships that are outgunned by everyone. It would be better if there were some sort of economy for us to exploit to get credits, but currently the only means of getting credits is "eating your way to the top".

Is there any way to increase your starting credits, or starting with a ship that isn't trash?

Hi,

Sorry to hear you were frustrated by the patch. Please try to keep in mind that we are still in alpha (not even beta) and this sort of thing is to be expected.

But if you start the game in dev mode set to true (this is in settings.json) , you can give yourself 25000 credits every time you press 'k.'

Hope that helps!

Well I'll answer this with a few points:

1.  This is an alpha version of an unreleased game which means that you are supposed to be TESTING ALL aspects of said game to make sure that when it enters Beta stage (which is after Alpha) that it can be tested without game breaking bugs which will be released (hopefully) after the minor bugs have been ironed out in the Beta.  With that said there should be no crying that your saves do not carry over nor should there be any crying about any way you are "forced" to play an alpha version of an unreleased game.

2.  I agree that it sucks starting from the bottom every time, BUT you can change this with multiple mods that are out.

I suppose the main reason for your frustration is that currently the only way to earn credit/progress is via fighting.

For now the beginning will always be tough until we have a more "civilized" way to progress (eg. trading, missions etc.). IMO the toughest part is when your fleet is of medium size.... not strong enough against large fleets yet too slow to catch up those small ones you can curb-stomp. But since the campaign at the moment is pretty much a placeholder I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yeah you guys are right, sorry for getting my frustrations out in a negative way.

How often do you see THAT on a forum post? :D

I applaud you, good sir.

This might interest you: it's a mod which starts you off flying a large fleet. http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=2272.0

Plus now you can use the station to slim down your fleet for a while!  :D

I call cheats!! Cheaters! How dare you, a new version demands a complete vanilla restart.  ;)

Best way to find the bugs and knowing it's not a mod.

I really enjoy the beginnings of new saves because I like small ship battles. This release seems a bit harder to me due to the fleet speed changes (which I like! Its awesome!) but not too bad. I am also looking forward to an economics system in the future.

Hold your horses there hombre, I don't take too kindly to no tinhorn puttin' down my lasher class frigate skills, I don't get out-gunned by nothin' short a' cruisers and them new(-ish) fangled Tri-Tach witchcraft machines.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it yet, but there's a fairly easy way to edit the initial ship(s) you start with.

Go into starfarer-core/data/world/factions/player, open it with your standard text editor.

You'll see a 'fleet compositions' section, with 'start1', 'start2', and 'start3'. I'm not sure what start1 is, to be honest. Start2 is what you start with, and start3 is what you'll end up in if you bet the house and lose.

maxFleetPoints does what it says on the tin. If you set it to 0 (which is the default), you'll get one ship at random.

The crew, supplies, marines and fuel seem to be based on whatever capacity you start with. So 30-40 days worth for a single ship will be numerically much less than a full fleet.

The ships portion has variant names followed by two numbers in brackets. Take the variant names from starfarer-core/data/variants; if you know what you want pick it, otherwise feel free to experiment. First number in brackets is the minimum number you can start with, second is the max-- but you won't go over the fleet point limit. If it crashes on startup then you probably typed something in wrong, but if I recall previous versions had one or two variants in the variant file that don't work.

One thing you'll notice is that there are a bunch of 'starting' variants commented out (the #). I don't think there's any other way to get those, so feel free to experiment. They tend to not be great, but starting with a fleet of starter frigates is interesting.

Finally, not sure how to add fighters. Maybe follow the 'wing' format in start1?

Note that a mod might have its own 'player' faction file that will override this.

Once we're able to mine all those asteroids you see everywhere it will probably be much easier to progress from the start (or from nothing, die at the start and you pretty much just have to start a new game)
