It'd be cool if there were example variants in the OP, or if you could describe how you improved upon vanilla variants. That way people could get an idea of how your variants are better, without having to start a new save or look through the data files

I ran the mod on my system with no issues and I have no clue what makes windows defender tick, so I can't exactly help you with that. My mod isn't a trojan and all its source code is available, but its ultimately up to you to decide whether to trust me.

The I want to say the "better" part of better variants mostly comes from autofit being off, officers having more relevant skills, and fleets with ships that have a certain level of cohesion. The in terms of variants, this mod removes some of the egregiously bad ones such as the beams only fury, but most variants in this mod are relatively similar to stuff that can be found in vanilla and some nice builds I've seen over my time playing.

You are doing Ludd's great work here. I hate the default variants, fighting the Hegemony feels like a joke in battle difficulty, they just have a big military. Going to play with it in my next mostly-vanilla (just with Nex, Diktat Enhancement and Iron Shell installed) and see how it feels.

...and probably underworld. Point is, i'm excited to see how things go.

I fixed a bug in Variants Lib that caused fleets to spawn with no ships so download the new (0.1.2) version of it. I have already updated the variants lib download links found on this mod's forum post to the new version.

Does this mod use modded ships as well because there is a bunch of Pather fleets with high tech ships and it scares me... but all their high tech ships are modded ships.

This mod doesn't even add content to the Luddic Path, so I'm inclined to say no

New release that fixes a crash that occurs when the exotic bounty event is viewed with v0.1.2 of Variants Lib. Download the new release (1.1.1) to get the fix. Do not run version 1.1.1 of this mod with a version of Variants Lib below 0.1.2, this will make the exotic bounty event crash again.

This update breaks saves.  Something about the file identifiers basically means that your saved games not recognize them as the original file - and prevents you from loading in.  Would be great if I could get the previous version.

You can find all versions of this mod here https://github.com/itBeABruhmoment/BetterVariants/releases. Versions 1.0.3 and below do not require Variants Lib and should not be run with it enabled. If you got the crash updating from 1.1.0, that's not supposed to happen and the crash log would be appreciated.

I saw how things go.

I love it!!! My only disappointment was that it didn’t (seem to?) touch default remnant fits, but that was a small disappointment.

I love that you seem to have been making code for making more variants via a library.

I could probably add variants too if I looked into the work you’re doing, but you’ve done a great job so far. Thanks!!!

This mod is a great way to increase the difficulty of the game. I'm enjoying it in conjunction with starpocalypse, nexerelin, and my other mods. On the current version of the game, it doesn't appear to disable the player's ability to use autofit, but I don't necesarily mind it. It would be fun to try a playthrough without that option, though.

Version 1.3.0 is out with content updated for 0.96a. Exotic bounties are removed for now while I figure out Magic Lib API changes.

Is there an easy way to remove specific variants? I tried deleting the variant folders for Redacted ships but get a 'ship hull variant not found' fatal error.
