Strafing Runs
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:38:37 AM »

So my idea concerns ships that just sit on their ass doin' nothing to help during battles

The idea is, certain weapons once put on ships can be used from outside the main battlefield to strike specific targets you and your ships have sighted...

See it as a "Space Artillery Strike"

Because ships simply sitting on their ass when the fight starts just feels REALLY dumb...

There are just soo many problems with that...

1. Artillery in space... it's not very effective...

- you can only shoot in a straight line and you have to hit spot on because there is no ground where the explosion get's triggered or weakly armored troops (infantery) who get hurt by shrapnells
- you might not be able to hit anything worthwhile... sure you can shoot at the slow moving cruisers and capital ships but their shields will absorb it easily... and frigates and most destroyers might be too fast to get hit by anything but a lucky shot

Just think about it... why is there no Artillery in real life Air to Air combat?

And no... Long Range Missiles don't count...
in starfarer most ships have sufficent PD to deal with that

2. Bad Gameplay mechanics

Space Artillery from outside the screen?
basically something you can't shoot back at?

also... you could triangulate the position of said Artillery (board computers ftw) and shoot back... with artillery
but if artillery was targetable by artillery... the one who shoots first at anything on the battlefield will loose...

also i'd request the ability to send my fighters/bombers and maybe even my undeployed frigates to deal with it
sure, we could have the ability to defend the artillery with other craft... but i think the game would mutate into 1 capital ship on each side of the battlefield while all other forces try to clean out any artillery outside of the screen.. the battle would get a huge autoresolve

3. Weapons

is it really worth it to sacrifice a mount for that?

With personal experience with playing with space artillery in Starfarer, I'd say yes, yes it is worth sacrificing a mount for it ;D

You won't get a "out of screen" tachyon lance....

So basically you want Tachyon Lances that shoot at you from outside of the battle field? Because, you know, the ones we have now aren't broken enough yet.  ::)

how does that weapon function? are the shells proximity based or is it a spray and pray system? more importantly how do you get one of those?

As for the first question, it's a spray and pray. With a lot of praying if you have friendly ships in the area :P
Secondly, it's in the Trade Scavengers mod, linkie in the sig ;D
