Pirate friendly playthrough
« on: December 29, 2021, 03:20:21 AM »

Is it viable?

About to start my first game (vanilla for now), but from what I have read - it seems like a lot of hassle for very little payoff. No grinding bounties for money, even when non-hostile their presence debuffs your colonies, losing a source easy loot etc. Sounds like I'd have to run from every pirate encounter in order to avoid long lasting rep penalties.

Can anyone give me an idea of the benefits of getting pirates friendly, or should I forget it for my first time? I'd much rather play a shady smuggler type than Space Emperor.

Friendly pirates is a huge boon. Your colonies will get 10% accessibility bonus and never be the target of raids and disruption so no hunting pirate star bases ad infinitum. This alone is a HUGE bonus especially if your planets not in the same system.

You can also find friendly, if temporary places to repair, refuel, resupply, and sell any trash while out exploring. What's more, you can sell them good blueprints and have them crush your enemies.

Sounds good, but do I need to run from every pirate encounter until I can get them neutral? Is killing a few OK?

I guess I should skip the tutorial, seems like I need kill a bunch there. I'd not get the free ships, right?

The free ships are still there if you go collect them.

You *can* kill pirates (provided you're still hostile to them), but it'll slow down your peace talks.

I tried a playthrough a while back trying get to 100 rep with every faction which includes befriending the luddic pathers and pirates. I think I was running back and forth between pather and pirate contacts and doing their requests to raise rep. I remember struggling a bit with combat though since those two factions are the usual punching bags, and I didn't want to make my reputation with all the other factions drop either so there wasn't much to fight for ships or drops.

Yeah, thats the sort of thing that was worrying me. Being behind in the gear curve. I dont want a completely friendly game though - happy to make an enemy or 2...eventually. I think I'll go for a low profile explorery smuggler until I get comfortable.

Perhaps you could pick your least favorite faction out of the Hegemony/Tri-tach/Diktat and designate them as your enemies so you have some targets to attack while you befriend the pirates?

I'd be worried about losing access to faction specific gear, if that's a thing.

Fighting a faction is a great way to get access to their unique gear.

Also, just because you're hostile with a faction doesn't mean you can't still trade with them. Just go dark and sneak into their starbases/planets.

Pirate playthrough is a great time to master the stealth mechanics.

Funny that this thread pops up - just as I get to this point.

Time to raise pirate faction and prop them up with the bestest of blueprints.
