"Speed up time" Toggle
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:56:33 PM »

Having to hold shift when traveling awhile or chasing something down can get tiring, would be great if it was a toggle or if you could do a double keypress to toggle it on.

Wait what does shift do?  -legitimately wants to know.

It currently doubles the speed of time when in the campaign map. Useful for traveling and repairing :D

OMG this is going to save me a lot of time!  LOL lately when I've had to repair or chase enemy fleets I would just go to the bathroom or get food, but this new information changes everything!

Edit:  @OP yes it would be nice if it were a toggle on/off, but if you are coming out of any type of situation to have it auto-toggle to off (after buying, combat, etc.)

As long as we can still use the shift key the way we do now I'm fine with this.

I think you mean time-compression, but yeah I would appreciate this as I hate having to wait for repairs and items to arrive.

No, we mean speeding up time. You are not required to add lore for a game mechanic that makes the game less of a chore to play.

Also, it even says "Speeding up time" when you hold shift down.

OT: As far as the toggle goes, it doesn't really bother me having to hold it down.

I'm most certainly in favor of this.  It allows the game to retain its sense of scale without being frustrating and can be worked into the lore if that's an issue (I liked X3's SETA).

EDIT: I was thinking of toggling increases in speed, up to 500% or something.

the speed up time function is already togglable, all you need to do is map it to the caps lock.

Mmm, I spot a fellow Doctor Insano fan. Time-compression is right.

WONK

Err, they are the same thing. I don't see how referring to a concept in a more formal name means I'm making up any sort of story or 'lore' about it.

Then I guess I don't quite understand why this:
I think you mean time-compression
needed to be said at all.

However, giving it more thought I can see how they are the same. I figured you were suggesting how the citizens of Starfarer actually went about speeding up the time, which annoys me. I apologize.

Mapping the speed-up key to CapsLock is already possible for the player.

What's not currently possible, and which IMHO is needed for those long aggravating jaunts from one diagonal corner of the map to the opposite corner, is a greater degree of speed-up. I'm suggesting the future addition of options such as 2X, 4X, 6X and perhaps even faster. At 2X it's still as slow as waiting for paint to dry. On a long haul, I actually get up from the computer and go fix myself a sandwich and a cup of tea. At least half of the time, when I return, my fleet still has not made its destination when I return to the computer!

So: let's have Shift (or whatever key) open up a very small panel along one edge of the screen where we can Page Up / Page Down, or Up Arrow / Down Arrow, through multiple faster rates for the precession of time. Once you key in your choice, you hit the same Shift key again, the little panel disappears, and you're on your way -- with alacrity. ;)

slow fleet movement is being addressed next patch by making it so that the fleet can only go as fast as its slowest member, as opposed to whatever the calcs are for determining speed as is. so, AFAIK, the slowest you could possibly go is 112 (unaugmented onslaught) / 122 (augmented onslaught)

I just tested it, it doesn't work on my end at least. Caps lock isn't a toggle key when programs are reading from it (unless the program specifically makes it so), so the toggle is for capital letters, not whatever function a program maps to it.
