Tried this one, but had to cut it due to balance issues.

One example is Fel PDS. A small energy turret with 400 energy dps for almost zero flux is insane. You can't just take a vanilla vulcan cannon and convert its damage type to energy. Frag damage weapons are balanced around the 25% damage effectiveness vs armor and shield. Now, granted, you did "lower" its dps from 500 frag to 400 energy, but you also added 100 EMP dps and 50 range.

To put it into perspective, Light Dual Machine Gun, which is terrible at everything except flux efficient shield dps at close range, deals the following dps vs different layers:
416 dps vs shields.
104 dps vs armor.
208 dps vs hull.
Poor PD performance. (turret rotation, accuracy, projectile speed, etc)

Vulcan cannon:
125 dps vs shields.
125 dps vs armor.
500 dps vs hull.
Great PD performance.

Now, compare that to Fel PDS:
400 dps vs shields.
400 dps vs armor.
400 dps vs hull.
100 EM dps.
Great PD performance.

Ergo, Fel PDS takes the most powerful aspects of two (three*) highly specialized weapons, Vulcan Cannons and Light Machine Guns. Vulcans and LMGs are allowed to be as powerful as they are in those specific scenarios because of their equally terrible performance in other scenarios. Fel PDS has none of those downsides.

Here's my suggestion:
Reduce energy DPS to 200 AND remove EM dps. Alternatively reduce energy dps to 150 and keep the EM dps.
Reduce range to 250.
increase OP cost to 6.

This post is long enough already, but the medium version is similarly problematic at 880 energy dps for 80 flux/s.

Don't take this criticism the wrong way, I want your mod to succeed, and good balance is much harder to achieve alone without rounds of feedback from the community, so here's my feedback! Cheers.

Yeah, they're due a balancing pass.

I am curious, though, have you seen them do much in practice other than be decent PD? Because despite having set up some ships to try to use them for damage I've found that it is very rare for them to have much of an effect as an anti-ship weapon.

Have you found a build that effectively uses them in that role?

Big news, version 0.9 is going to see the mod upgrade to a proper Faction!

Stardust Ventures will be a small faction located just a bit NE of the core, and headquartered in the Talia star system. There will also be two small colonies out in uncharted space.

With the arrival of the faction, I'm going to be adding in Midline versions of many of the ships for export to the vanilla factions. They will use these in preference over the base ships, which will be mostly seen with SDV, Independents, and the Diktat (since they love the built-in solar shielding)

Base vs Midline storm runner :

Not sure how long it will take me to make midline versions of the combat ships, but I should ship 0.9 with at least a few of them.

The shops will still be around, of course, and it will all be configurable. So you can have the faction on/off and the shops on/off (or how many).

Probably nothing too exciting about the faction itself for the initial release, but I do have a bunch of stuff that I'm considering doing with them.

No ETA, yet. Still tons of work to do to get it all release ready. But steady progress is being made!

@Mephansteras, please continue your great work!
I haven't learned all the ships in this mod, but the weapon pack is super awesome!

If anyone is interested, here is some of the Lore and general timeline I've been working up for the Faction version of SDV.

As a note, the Faction will start with 2 built-up colonies in the Talia system near the core, and will be colonizing two planets outside of the core at the start of the game. You'll see these referenced in the timeline.

Stardust Ventures was a minor shipyard during the years of the Domain, focused almost exclusively on the creation of long range exploration and colonization ships. Their proprietary core system allowed safe passage through hyperspace storms and other dangerous phenomena. With the collapse of the gate system, however, many of the crucial parts necessary are now no longer available, and the company was forced to make do with what can be created locally.

The instability of the sector and its growing piracy also spurred the creation of a whole combat line of ships to help escort what were once the primary focus of the entire enterprise. These days the company has carved out a small niche in the sector, selling ships and weapons to various factions and independent explorers. It is uncertain if such a relatively weak group can maintain that neutrality forever or if they will be subsumed into one of the larger powers.

Timeline:
Pre-Collapse <0c : Small shipyard focused on exploration/colonization ships

Venture Industries and Stardust Hall settled to provide Persean Sector manufacturing base and living quarters for executives and workers.

Collapse 0c - 50c : Loss of specialized equipment and support cuts off the company from most of its vendors. Local factory is retooled to provide as much as possible.

Brabant 62c : Settled by independent minded workers, the colony initially focuses on mining and later expands to refining to support the SDV industries in Talia.

First AI War (~100c) : CEO Brandon Silverlight makes the decision to stay neutral. This causes and end to any ongoing joint development work with Tri-Tachyon and a chilling of relations. Hegemony accepts the neutrality provided the company begins to build warships. A similar deal is struck with the League. Neither side is happy with the Company, but has much bigger issues to deal with.

Warlord Loke's invasion 160c: Increased pirate raiding and dangers prompts the formation of the System Defense Force military HQ and an increase in internal fleet development.

Rise of the Sindrian Diktat 182c: Sindria contracts with the now famously neutral shipyard to work on warships that fit with the Solar Shielding doctrine of the Diktat. Joint work between Sindrian engineers, Tri-Tachyon scientists, and Stardust engineering dramatically improve the capabilities of the Stardust Core systems following breakthroughs in the Solar Shielding technology.

Second AI war 189c: CEO Cameron Olympus follows tradition and refuses to be involved in anything other than a manufacturing capacity for either side. Relations with Tri-Tachyon sour further, and contracts are broken. While some SDV hulls are in use by TT, no new orders are made.

CEO retires 204c: Cameron Olympus retires, leaving the company in the hands of the capable but relatively young Ravenna Silverlight, great-granddaughter of Brandon Silverlight.

Star Seeker Initiative: 205c : Captain Danlia convinces Ravenna and the board to approve the expansion of the company out beyond the core worlds to make use of the rich resources, many long forgotten, throughout the sector. Wayfarer's Rest and the whimsically named Mystical Grilltopia are founded and serve as hubs for the increased exploration efforts.

[Player arrives in 206c]

I'm certainly open to any suggestions or feedback anyone has on this and can answer questions on what I'm going to be doing with the faction release.

Been working on lots of stuff for the new version, including some sprite upgrades.

The latest to get a makeover is the Storm Herald.

New version is on the right.

I also finally figured out the tags to put in that make sure the missile mounts overlay in the correct order, so it no longer looks like the lower ones are on top. Which is a small detail, but one I'm happy to finally have fixed.

Huh, looks like I forgot to update the version number in mod_info when I uploaded it. Content is correct for 0.8.3, though, since the zip has the Scorpion beam in it.

Thanks for letting me know!

I'd update it, but actually modifying the zip file set to be the release version is a pain and nothing should break because of it. You can just manually update the version in mod_info.json if you need to.

We'll be moving on to 0.9 soon anyway.

While I'm here, have a look at the upcoming midline export of the Storm Herald:

Haven't had much time to work on the mod in the past month, but I did manage to complete a resprite that I've wanted to do for quite a while.

Here is the old and new Storm Bringer battlecruiser!

It'll also be getting some stat reworks, with a new hullmod and ship system although those are still in development.

This also puts me much closer to a resprite of its sister hull, the Solar Flare fleet carrier which is also long overdue for a resprite.

I still have a bunch of work to do before it is release worthy, but if anyone wants to try out the Faction update my current build is pretty stable and can be downloaded here

Warning: It is NOT save compatible with previous versions! It will break existing saves that already use Stardust Ventures.

It is otherwise safe to add mid-save, though, and the Faction will spawn mid-game provided you don't change the default settings.

I'm happy to hear any feedback folks have about it!
