Multiplayer
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:56:18 AM »

I've been playing Starfarer for quite a while now and it seems that a multiplayer system similar to those in the total war game series would work quite well. Players could decide with each other on a spending allowance then build and combat their fleets, money can be spent on ship hull's, weapons and crew quality. Players could also decide on the level of capture points, asteroids and nebular's before beginning the battle. I think this is a good idea as it would allow players who have pretty much built their idea's of a perfect fleet in singleplayer and don't have much left to do, to put their strategies to the test against other players.

For single battles it is quite possible that, at some point, multiplayer is possible (whether Alex puts it in or some crazy modder depends).

However, campaign multiplayer is highly unlikely due how incredibly complex Alex plans to make the campaign mode in the future. Most of those plans are just not compatible with multiplayer.

I wouldn't plan on a campaign multiplayer, just simple custom battle's players can set up against each other. Similar to how the missions work with players picking a map they want but the players get given a money allowance that they can build a fleet with for the battle.

Adding multiplayer to a game isn't a matter of just changing a flag in the compiler options--you have to write the netcode to get the games to talk to each other, and that takes time away from developing the single-player experience. For that reason alone I seriously doubt anything like this will see the light of day.

I hope it doesn't get added, for the very same reason.

Most common suggestion that will never happen:

These are just a small sample of the many many threads. Including posting by Alex, Ivy and local guru Avan.
Short Summary: No

Also keep in mind this is a game based on precision and would likely misfunction in a latent environment.

It just feels like a wasted oppotunity to increase the games playability, at the moment i find myself building up a fleet that can beat the hedgemony then just waiting for updates so i can repeat the process.

its still alpha, features are missing, but the core is rock solid(unusual for alpha)

Multiplayer often attracts a kind of community which can ruin a game. It would be really cool though(for single battles ofc). maybe some day the neo of modding will make it.

Do you have any idea what it will take to build THAT?! Plus it's probably illegal, you would actually have to hack the game, of sorts.

Just now, I thought I heard someone say, "Challenge Accepted". I am not a modder though. Don't have the technical skills yet to even consider myself mediocre.
