About large Gauss guns
« on: August 26, 2021, 10:23:37 AM »

How come the HVD cause EMP damage but the Gauss, wich is effectively a HVD but bigger, does not ?
DESPITE being one of the most expensive ballistics in the game and having a very good reason to do EMP damage.
And if its not a good reason for that, then how is it a good reason for the HVD ?

on that same topic, why is it also the case for the smaller railguns ?

I dunno something about that seems off...

IMO the weapons have unique upsides and downsides and aren't really aren't simple upsize/downsizes of each other.

Gauss already has strong per-hit damage for a kinetic and thus doesn't need extra "punch" against enemies who drop their shields.

In fact, I feel too many weapons - vanilla and modded both - have high EMP (or the EMP effect itself is somewhat overtuned) and inflict lose-only situations on slower ships which must either a.) eat the flux damage on their shields or b.) be disabled into uselessness. One more point to strong shield ships!

Needler family was thought of as family, whereas Railgun, HVD and Gauss are different guns. Considering autocannons and LAG will be getting 700 range in the next version, Railgun won't even stick out as long ranged, just overall good.

Picking one weapon out of the 'high-end Kinetic ballistic' lineup to have generous EMP vs. some EMP on all of them is a smart way of having your cake (EMP on a ballistic weapon) and eating it too (not having EMP/Kinetic stunlock from spamming any one of the elite Kinetic ballistics), so I assume that's what Alex had in mind.

It's the same logic behind there being no 1000-range medium-slot beam weapon doing Energy damage, and having instead the Grav Beam in the med slot and the HIL for the large; it creates an interesting breakpoint where you have to combine weapons to do both shield and armor damage vs. both weapons doing Energy damage.
