bounty/friendly ai advice
« on: July 17, 2021, 09:30:02 AM »

hey guys, so didnt have a problem in the past, but this patch seems to be brutal in regards to your friendly ai and combat.  i have battleships and a full stack, but any bounty over 200k is a large enough fight where out of 8 of them ive had a perfect run, then suddenly one of my ships flies off into the enemy pack and i dont see him and boom a bs that was full is now instantly dead.

Its been the same thing literally every time ive tried a battle of decent size.   i had to move my pilots from aggressive to steady already as the aggressive ones all just wonder into enemy fire and die anyways, but even this seems like a problem now.

so in short, how do you keep the idiot ai from committing suicide? i literally cant win fights of relative size now without unacceptable casualties and i wasnt having any issues in the past.  i try and pull them back and they just dont respond.

They respond much better to direct retreat. When they are safe, cancel the order by giving a move order. Thats how i solve this issue.

You probably want to share more details regarding your fleet and the 200K+ bounties that are problematic for your fleet, so that you can obtain precise advices. (Also: which battle size? vanilla or modded?)

Generally speaking:
  • having a "good"/balanced fleet composition, or a composition specifically tailored to a specific encounter
  • having "good"/balanced loadouts for your ships (or loadouts specifically tailored to a specific encounter), having appropriate build-in hullmods ("S-mods") in some/most/all of them
  • having as much skilled officers as you can, with appropriate skills
  • having appropriate synergies in player character skills
  • properly use battle orders (capture, defend, engage, avoid, retreat, ...)
  • avoid having your ships being outnumbered and surrounded

Depending on progression in your campaign, the first 200K bounties might be too hard. If that's the case you just need to wait until your fleet is stronger before attempting to fight such bounties.

Also, be mindful going from 200K to 250K, then from 250K to 300K, then..., are significant increasing difficulty steps, more than what the reward value change suggests. Yes, 350K+ bounties are much much harder than 200K ones.

Assigning each of them an escort/battle buddy can help.
