Ship size vs weapon size
« on: May 28, 2021, 04:43:18 AM »

Kinda funny how absolutely tiny the smaller ships are. The weapons are bigger than them.
Some of them look like clown cars, only instead of being stuffed with clowns, they are stuffed with weapons.

One of the reason I cannot stand most of the vanilla small ships. Far too small...or the weapons too big for them.
Bigger ships are OK.
Is it just me, or are there other people who think the same?

Yeah putting a Heavy Blaster on a wolf feels wrong, the gun is so big. And dont even talk about tempest and hyperion, thoose look abrurd with medium energy weapons.

Agreed, medium guns on frigates look silly.
It's not as bad if they're on a turret simply because of the top down view. In profile they'd probably seem just as ridiculous.

Some do look good, the Sunder is basically what happens when the UNSC finds a plasma lance, the Wolf is a frigate hunter so of course would pack something to outgun others. Also like the Brawler for strapping two batteries to an engine and calling it a ship.

What can i say, spinal weaponry and brutal design efficiency are so pleasing to look at.

Somewhat I have to agree with Scropixel. in Fixed variants as with the sunder and the wolf, its better. But for the tempest it really looks ridiculus.

I see no problem here. The ship determines by it's weapons, that's why they built in the first place, to carry weapons. And since it's space you do not care about physical balance of the ship.

There are mudskipper mk 2 freighter, which got his cargo bay house a large ballistic weapon, and it doesn't look odd at all.

I still want to see some kind of frigate with a big sized weapon mount. Something basically like a Ox with a weapon on top, basically a moving platform, more gun than ship, no aerodynamics at all. Even if it's worse than the vigilance I want to see it just to have an idea of the dimensions.

...Mudskipper Mk.2.  You just asked for the Mudskipper Mk.2.

It's an okay gun drone if you stick a devastator and assault package on it with aux support.

I agree Tempest looks too small with a a pair of turreted medium guns. On the other hand to me Wolf only looks complete with a medium gun.

But hey, we're looking at them from the top down, maybe those ships are really tall?

From the concept art the ships are generally fairly flat.

The weapons are oversized for a reason. IIRC, WAAAAAY back, the current mediums were larges and smalls were those small round rivet looking things you might see on some older ships, like the Onslaught. Alex decided to upsize them because what weapons a ship has determines your response to it partly and he wanted to make them stand out more

Repeat the SS mantra : nothing is to scale, not even range and distance.  ;D
