looking for a ship
« on: May 10, 2021, 09:52:52 AM »

Hi, im looking for a flagship(flying myself)
which should have "my" moving speed

something like SO hammerhead speed, but more tanky, maybe more weapons, (&higher price)
like eagle, but faster
no phase flagship(on this play through)
at least some ballistic slots
mods are ok, just started testing it(have vayras shippack)
system:something usefull, so more dmg or speed, not flares

Do you mean a ship that works well with SO?

Because packing an SO Hammerhead's speed into cruiser grade durability and firepower is a pretty tall order.

A cruiser with base speed >200 would not be balanced. Maybe SO aurora with systems expertise has an average speed somewhere up there.

It doesn't have the ballistic slots, but I really like the Aurora for high-speed killing.  It can solo many capital ships.

The Hyperion has cruiser-like firepower and flux dissipation, and is nigh-unkillable, but you won't be able to stay on the field for more than 15 minutes.  You can always have backup Hyperions for you to take over though.

There are, that I can think of, two ships that might satisfy what you're looking for; both are cruisers with mobility systems, and you'll probably still need SO to get to the speeds you're asking for.

One of them is a unique hull from Tahlan Shipworks; if you're using that mod and Nexerelin with Prism Freeport enabled, it'll turn up for sale at Prism Freeport on rare occasion.

The other is the Starlight Aurora from Underworld. It's an Aurora, but with slightly better stats, notably higher supply costs, and universal slots instead of synergies for the front small mounts - so there's the ballistic slots you asked for.

Try the Starlight Aurora from the Underworld mod. Basically Aurora but with small universals instead of small synergies for the 4 hardpoints for your ballistic needs, plus it has stats (speed, flux, etc.) boosted across the board.

Additionally, a certain [REDACTED] small energy weapon does kinetic damage, so if you're looking for ballistics for the sake of anti-shield, that's an option.

Whenever it gets updated for 0.95a, the Ship & Weapon Pack has the Gorgon, a boss Medusa, that's also nice to use for this role. Tahlan has multiple ships that could fit, if you're willing to get rid of the ballistic requirement (via for example the [REDACTED] above). Yukikaze comes to mind.

maybe 200 is too much
I mean something like Hammerhead, 90base+50 zeroflux+SO+ injector = ~200 for melee
or less speed for HVD, but still faster than a brick
I would keep .91 SO Hammerhead as flagship, if it would have the survivability from Eagle and speed from Hammerhead

@ Vanshilar
is the Gorgon an new ship? have Ship&weapon pack 1.12 on my old PC with starsector 0.91, cant find Gorgon in the shipslist, do you mean Gargolye?

I will try also the other ships like Starlight Aurora

Hyperion is also nice, but I can not handle Teleport, AI pilot is much better
maybe I should try that, or scarab

hardflux with energy is also ok
I just like Assault Chainguns on engines, maybe I could switch to the op emp weapons ;)

The aurora is definitely closest to what you want, as its plasma thrusters mean it has an average speed of ~180 or so  with systems expertise (based on the frigates it can catch), and whilst burning it has a speed of ~250 which lets you melee things very safely as you can flee from most situations/press the attack on someone trying to get away. It's very expensive though

Nope, Gorgon's been around for a while - but it won't show in the codex. It's one of the IBB boss ships; the bright orange medusa-variant.

I agree the AI is better with phase skimmers, but not with the Hyperion's teleport.  They are very skittish and are warping constantly, which causes them to be hit more and significantly hurts their dps.

The Hyperion is as tanky as some capital ships, so you don't need to be teleporting constantly.  You should try to back off before teleporting out, because you're vulnerable for a brief moment before the teleport triggers.  I prefer teleporting in rather than teleporting out, because of this.

What really makes the Hyperion hard for me to use sometimes, is the extreme speed and maneuverability.

If you are looking for something to carry you for a while then go with the Hyperion. ( Edit: Although rereading your prompt it looks like you want ballistic weapons, so this whole thing might have been in vain. lol.)

As someone who sucks at piloting I usually kill probably 3, 5, or more times the deployment cost in that ship per encounter and I repeat, I suck at piloting. If you wanna experiment with it and likewise suck at piloting try the following (warning incoming wall of text):

Slap three mining blasters on it, take SO, and take hardened subsystems. I'm still on the last update before this one so I have SO built in, but you should still be able to outfit it with those three things comfortably without doing so. Maybe you have to build in hardened subsystems. In any case get those things on it. Without SO the build literally doesn't work, so while I wish I could take the ship with a reasonable deployment time (skills help) fast and hard is the only way to do it.

For weapons I chose blasters because the goal here is to maximize consistent DPS (so nothing with charges) after Hyperion blinks, during the window between the time you blink in and the enemy raises shields towards where you jumped. This means you want a platform that hits hard in a single strike at about the same rate as you can blink. Mining blasters are great at this. Phase lances MIGHT be better, but finding them was a pain. It's important that whatever you chose, all your weapons are the same or fire their projectiles at the same speed otherwise leading targets wont work as well.

Next map all three mining blasters to a single number key and set them to linked fire and automatic. When you go into battle to goal is to be doing the least amount of clicking, so while you CAN fire the blaster manually it's easier this way. The game will move your input to whatever key you set the blasters to every time you load in (and therefore make them manual again) , so you need to remember to hit another number key at the beginning of the battle to get the blasters to actually auto fire like we want them to. Any key works, just get your input off the number key that has your blasters on it.

Next, I set the control scheme to turn to cursor from the WASD setup it normally has. Use whatever scheme works for you, but this was the real key that let me do some manual piloting. I think the shift key does the strafing with the normal WASD setup.

Now for the execution. What you wanna do is learn to abuse the blink distance to assassinate ships from behind. Move up to whatever ship it is that you want to damage with shields up and blink to the other side of the ship. The AI should put your ship facing your target most of the time and the ship will autofire those blasters right into it's jucy hull. The only issue is it also drops your shields after each blink, so get into the habit of doing a two button combo of blink then really quickly shields every time you blink. If you kill the ship, cool, otherwise keep the S key pressed to reverse out of range of PD and rearward facing weapons. Repeat until the ship is dead and move to the next one. This basic strategy works for everything I've seen, including scary stuff with big far reaching weapons and omni-directional shields like the Paragon. It takes some finesse in cases like that, but it's more than possible. Even for a potato like me.

Beyond damage from rear facing weapons and ship explosions watch out for missiles and fighters that can break your engines. Fortunately you can still blink when this happens so if you find yourself in a situation where things are threatening to you and your engines are broke spam the blink option away from things that hurt you and raise shields each time. The real enemy is the clock, as SO makes your deployment time a scarce commodity. Practice a little against stuff in the simulator and I can guarantee it's a fun time.

Honestly what you're asking for is not a balanced ship.  You're wanting a low/mid tech loadout with high tech mobility, or a proper cruiser but with destroyer speeds.

And that's totally fine, but your path of least resistance is prob just do some basic modding of the existing ships yourself.  You already mentioned that you're okay with modships, and aurora/eagle are very close to what you want. Why not just change a few mounts on the aurora to hybrid, or bump up eagle's base speed?

The Prometheus Mk 2 will go >200 speed, while the burn drive is active.

I use Vanilla only, so I think what you're looking for is the Enforcer-class destroyer, however you can use the Enforcer (XIV) Class destroyer but you'll sacrifice a bit of speed for better stats in other areas. 122base speed, 184 top speed max, 5x medium ballistics, 4x small missile slots. Skills you'll need are coordinated maneuvers, Special Modifications, Helmsmanship and I believe Crew Training, reliability Engineering to really squeeze that extra speed out. This is of course assuming you have it piloted by you or an officer.

I personally build it with 2x Heavy machine guns, 2x Thumpers, 1x Assault Chaingun. Though I have considered replacing the 2x Thumpers with 2x Duel flack cannons to be better against fighters and missiles but would have to sacrifice some points else where. Built in Hull mods: Hardened shields, Hardened subsystems, Unstable injector. Hull mods: flux distributor, Safety overrides. 0 Capacitors, 30 vents.

Its a truly terrifyingly effective ship. Would recommend having 10 of these in your fleet. Would also Highly recommend using aggressive or reckless officers and  command points to really get them to overpowered levels of effectiveness in battle.
