Is tech-mining still worth it somehow?
« on: May 05, 2021, 11:33:28 AM »

Just exhausted three ruins and didn't get anything noteworthy, it was always just some weapons which i already had and LPCs, aside from the tiny amount of resources.

Wouldn't ask if it didn't chew up an industry slot, but this is practically 1 or 2 cycles worth of profit loss. It used to drop some nice things in the past, but either I'm unlucky in .95a or it got some serious stealthy nerfs just like Pristine Nanoforge did

Tech-mining is very swing and miss. I've gotten two Alpha Cores and a corrupted Nanoforge as the first month's loot from vast ruins before, this playthrough I got double Gamma Core and a Buffalo (TT) blueprint from vast ruins with a SP upgrade and an Alpha Core. Basically don't build it unless you don't care about money anymore, it's not worth the risk otherwise.

On some colonies I've gotten alpha cores and some of those neat new industry artifacts while other times I'll get squat.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to do slash-and-burn tech mining early on before you're ready to properly colonize. Take a faction commission so you're not worried about regular expenses. Add a waystation and you've got a convenient little outpost for far-flung exploration. After some time pack up and set up shop elsewhere.

Current version size 3 colonies are immune to all sorts of outside faction interference iirc.
That said it’s totally legit to perform hit and runs on all the sweet vast ruins.

I've found a Doom blueprint on the 3rd vast ruins planet I tech-mined, plus alpha-cores and other goodies from first 2 vast ruins planets.

You can always do tech-mining later when you are richer, once you have 2-3 colonies but don't have 6 planets colonized yet, and no longer worried about income, go out and tech-mine all the big ruins you can find. Then set up your 6 planets colony.

If you are trying to do tech-mining early game hoping to strike big when you are still worried about income then of course it may not be "worth it" depending on your luck, so don't do it early game, do it mid-game or later.

...Oh, right. I should go back in and edit my base game files to make tech mining not count as an industry again.

Where can I change that?

Nah, pirate raids will still come. Not that they will do much damage if your only building is tech-mining.

Tech-mining is technically always profitable, but it's a very small profit margin for a lot of tedious clicking. Buying crew on the cheap, buying a crew transport, flying it all to the system, collecting the loot before abandoning. Just wastes a lot of IRL time.

data/campaign/industries.csv - make a backup copy, then edit the tags for techmining, changing "techmining, industry, industrial" to "techmining, structure, industrial".

The storage issue can be remedied by having another colony as the production point - it will send finds there.

You can also do the initial salvage on a bunch of ruins and come up emptyhanded, too. So it's no surprise they're hit and miss, and you might not get anything from multiple worlds in a row.

As a counter example, I've done a handful of these in my current game and gotten a few artifacts. Not the ones I really wanted, but, useful nonetheless.

What I would suggest is treat your tech mining colonies as disposable. Don't invest in them much at all, abandon & move to the next once the ruins are exhausted.

Even with Vast ruins it feels like a lotto. Ya you can get some great stuff, but it sure as hell doesn't justify an industry slot these days with the colonies not being free money anymore.

Set up another SP/Alpha Core Tech-mining industry on a vast ruins world.

Three Gamma Cores and a Kite (S) Blueprint. Good thing I don't care about money anymore ::).

I am not sure if putting AI core even help.
Had some bad luck when Techmining with Alpha core was bringing some puny stuff but without it was dropping good items.
Usually i colonize one planet as my main base and then use small colonies to tech mine and after clearing it to abandon it.

The only pull that matters with tech-mining is the guaranteed first month loot, which doesn't benefit from cores/SP. Anything after is irrelevant even for vast ruins.
