A compliment to the writing

Spoilers for the Academy Quests

Just wanted to compliment the writing, especially with the newest update. I've always really liked Starsector since it really nails a particular vibe and the writing, even the incidental stuff which most people who haven't had to slave over a Google Sheet of 1,000 random dialogue blurbs that need to be made for the coders don't appreciate, has always really built that up.

Anyway I have been doing the new Academy quests finally and I've actually been extremely impressed with how well it's written and I feel like that hasn't been said enough. As a game writer myself, it is really lovely how well it ties around the universe and makes the whole thing feel alive. Normally I just wipe out pirates and make friendly with the rather faceless factions and *** off to settle colonies till I'm bored.

However, tracking down the scientist for the Academy and having to shake and bake with a who's who in galactic politics has been a blast. I loved actually throwing money around to pirate bosses and sitting down with them for chats, talking to some dock workers about their superstitions about the local calamity that was a huge event to them and is little more than a blip on my radar to me, and then negotiating with the station head and hearing about how byzantine the inner workings of the League are and how her station has its own outlook and culture and dislike of other League planets.

It just makes everything feel so much deeper but I feel almost nobody ever talks about this sort of thing (I noticed the same with Battle Brothers!) so I just wanted to show my appreciation of it in case nobody else had.

Agreed 100%. The only "criticism" I have is that I need more! I must read more about the Sector!

I hope that when release comes we'd have more than just the main questline, but that might be asking too much from one writer who's also the artist!

And yes Battle Brother's writing is also nice!

Yeah, the writing is really good.

The characters are interesting without being trite or card board cutouts of stereotypes. None of the broad ideas of the storyline are new, but the whole thing still manages to feel fresh.  That's super impressive.

I'd like to pile on and affirm writing as good. The only unforgivable problem with it is that there isn't enough of it. So, @David, stop lurking and get back to writing! Please. Please...  ;D

Flavour text always add a lot to a world. It was always very nice to learn a bit more every time you read a ship or planet's description, and the new quests with fleshed-out storylines greatly help at immersing ourselves by giving a sentiment of leaving an impact.

Now for the desired impact of those quest, does anyone know if the release intend on having those directly impact the sector, or should they be mostly free of consequences in order to preserve the game flexibility?

Yep, I feel the same. It makes the world so much more fun to engage with, I remember fighting off a Hegemony captain with a stick up his ass and feeling so invested in blowing up all his escort ships, then running from his slow, lumbering capital while he (presumably) screamed in rage from his bridge.

It's all really well done, great job David. If you ever write something longer I'll be sure to read it!

Thank you much David! I was so happy when I read this bit, is Alpha Centauri an inspiration at all? It is one of my favorite stories of all time and I cant tell you how happy I am to see it referenced in another great game, the chairman would be proud.

I completely agree, the writing is excellent! I'm grateful for the work you guys do.

Characters feel unique, learning about the lore is super cool. I'm playing as a pirate and sneaking through League space while on a quest was a ton of fun. The small stuff like selecting the option to wave back at a character and getting a tiny disposition boost are great additions. I was feeling the immersion.

I don't have much to say about the story right now other than "I liked it", so... I liked it.
The Academy quest texts and characters, but also little things like some of the skill descriptions, the bar interaction for the competitor disruption mission, and more.

Definitely agree, I whined about the player character sounding like a space gangster a bit, but that was mostly to fish for a few laughs, I really enjoy the added flavor in every snippet of lore added, I'm an immersion nerd and all the added fleshing out of the game world has been in the right direction without any kind of doubt, definitely worth the effort. I'd gravitate more towards a more neutral or less defined character for automatic (no player control) interactions, but I certainly understand having some kind of "anchor" to what the character interactions lean towards to have some sort of frame of reference. My favorite text choices were the comedic ones, it really adds to lighten up the solemnity of such an overbearing world, you wouldn't survive in such an environment sane without a few laughs and snarky remarks.

I always noticed the chairman look alike, but I feel dumb for missing the others, especially the Santiago.
