Would you be interested in a Mod Manager?
« on: April 27, 2021, 03:36:01 AM »

Hello! I'm a big Starsector (and starsector mods) fan, I'm also a software developer.

I feel like I'm missing a mod manager for starsector, with mod manager I mean an app that:
1. Shows me a list of my installed mods
2. shows me the ones that are out of date
3. lets me easily update selected or all out of date mods
Bonus features:
4. Browse a list of mods and select which ones to install
5. Mod profiles for toggling enabled mods for different saves/runs

I've heard that starsector is supported by nexusmods and their client Vortex. But it seems like a lot of mods don't get published to nexusmods

So my plan is to write my own mod manager.
My plan is to extend on the .version format used by the Version Checker mod by LazyWizard

this means that out of the box it would be able to support use case 2 for all mods that already supports the version checker mod.
I'd write some documentation on which fields mod-authors would have to add to their .version-file in order to opt-in to having the mod manager update the mod.

The mod manager would open source and light-weight.

Please let me know what you think :)

This is why the Starsector community is the greatest I've ever seen!  ;D

How can we say no to that?  :)

Are they working on something similar already?

I need a mod manager that forces mod makers to update their mods faster.

I think thats called going to their patreon and giving them lots of money... and convincing your friends to do the same.

It's called 'money'.

(To be clear, I don't actually want to do this for pay and I think it would be bad all around if I did; but a lot of the update delays are in fact money delays specifically. I don't think I could actually go much faster because of the scale of changes I'm making.)

We already had every function and centralized hub just suck.
Why suck? Because it’s monopoly and everyone will be slaves of the emperor’s rules.

Nexus has terms:
Absolutely no copyrighted work is to be used without permission of the original creator. This includes content from other games, from DLCs, music creators or from other file authors. This also includes members from countries that do not recognise copyright laws.

This line alone renders about half the active mods are not to be hosted on Nexus.

Since all my mods have poor reputation, I deem my efforts unworthy thus no more updates will be made.

The vanilla launcher already has #1 and #2, #4 is already here on the forums, and at least for myself #5 wouldn't be much of a use with how often I either go through a run or just start a new one. #3 maybe. I feel like it would still run into issues with the very scattered frequent hotfix nature of a lot of the mods though. And everyone would still end up on the forums for feedback, updates and bug reports anyway.

In this specific case it's really just adding an extra step to get in the way of what's already there. The program equivalent to having a valet. It's faster and easier for me to just walk to my car and get in myself.

I think the bigger issue is that it would create a tsunami of verbal abuse in favor of only making non-save-breaking updates, which would effectively freeze mods at whatever content state they were integrated at. That would tank a lot of new modders out of the starting gate, because the first mod you make needs a lot of revision to be a good mod. I and a lot of other established modders could probably hack it, but it would create a huge barrier to getting more new mods that add a lot of content to the world.

Thankfully, most of this modding community does not steal stuff to use in their mods but there are some that do.

And regardless, that rule is a *good* thing. Wow, don't steal stuff to make your stuff, the horror!

Ultimately I think a dedicated starsector mod manager would be a good thing in the long run.

The issue is long term support, if you don't intend to stick around until the end of time, there may come a point when the manager itself stops being compatible with the game, and THAT will cause a bit of of a crisis if it came about.
