Thank you for this amazing mod! I just wonder if it is possible to apply only the milestones but not the skill changes?
There is a way, but not recommended; make a backup of the entire 'Quality Captains' folder before doing anything else!

Once you've created that backup .zip / .rar / .7z archive (the last two have better compression, but is irrelevant for anything that's smaller than double-digit megabytes) and stored it elsewhere...

1. In Windows' File Explorer, make your way to your Starsector 'mods' folder; more specifically, to '<Starsector installation path>\mods\Quality Captains\data\characters\skills\'

2. Delete any/all of the files that end with .skill, except for those that start with 'captains_'; those are what tell the game to use the Quality Captains versions of said skills or not.

The game would CTD if the 'captains_' .skill files were missing, as those are the added milestones.

This'll work but you'll also have to edit mod_info.json to remove the vanilla skill overrides. I'll consider releasing a separate milestones/perks minimod but that idea's a ways down the line.

Hey so I just started using this mod in a new playthrough and I have the 10 lower skills yet all the milestone skills still show as locked with the 10 skills needed showing. I've tried turning off milestones and back on and I don't think I have any other mods that would affect it

Milestones are unlocked automatically as you complete certain story content.  :)

How do I reassign skills? It appears locked for me, even if I disable milestones.

Nevermind, the milestones finally disappeared. Only had to engage in a fight.

Google took me to some older comments on this mod dating back to march 2024, but is the Automated Ships skill still bugged as far as alpha core drops are concerned? I've destroyed enough ordo fleets from a gate system I farm that I have over 100 gamma and beta cores each, but not once have they dropped alpha. I just went to test by disabling the skill and sure enough, the next fleet I fight drops me one single core which is more than none I've gotten up to this point.

I'd hate if this was still true. I really like the changes to the stats, especially with the salvage skill applying to rare loot making colony items easier to find, but I also really don't want to have to drop my Radiant just to keep getting alpha cores.

The Automated Ship skill making AI core drops rarer is actually a vanilla bug, as per this bug report. More specifically, any recoverable automated ships cannot and will not also drop their AI cores, and this affects all forms of automated-ship recovery options, whether it's the vanillla Automated Ships or modded variants of the skill.

Fortunately, the Nexerelin mod has a fix for this bug in its current beta update, so you can download that version of Nexerelin or wait until the update is officially live. Barring that, the bug will be resolved in the next Starsector update, so hopefully it no longer becomes an issue by then.

I don't doubt what you're saying is true, but I find it absolutely bizarre that I only started experiencing this bug after using Quality Captains. I've been playing Starsector since 0.96, and I've never had issues farming alpha cores until I picked up the mod recently. I've been using the Automated Ships skills for months in previous saves after getting some terraforming mod that lets you create Remnant Stations, but I didn't have problems back then either.

I'm glad to know at least this mod is apparently safe from being the cause of the problem. Do we know when the next Nexerelin official update will be out? I don't mind waiting if necessary.

What it turned out to be is that QC has better recovering options than vanilla. What a journey. Indeed to address the AI core drop bug please get the latest Nex beta version!

wont spoil much, other than "go to a bunch of planets before other factions take them". they're pretty much all "do this specific vanilla quest" types of deals, and some of those require the planet to be owned by the original faction to pick up.

Can you look or get help about automated ship skill disabling ai core drops. Apparently nexerelin fixes that in latest patch. Or does it also fixes this mod.

I'm surprised this mod's FAQ says it's safe to add midgame, might actually try enabling it on my current save if it is.

Anyone have a proper list of the Milestones and what they do? I'm tempted to add this to my current 2week old game.
