Broadsword-wing is in a weird place stats-wise?
« on: April 10, 2021, 06:45:56 AM »

Of all the vanilla fighter wings, I think the Broadsword is a bit of an outlier in its thoughness relative to its speed.
200 speed, 100 armor, 750 hull, 3 per wing

Compared to the (visually larger) Gladius
300 speed, 75 armor, 500 hull, 2 per wing
Thunder
450 speed, 75 armor, 500 hull, 2 per wing
Khopesh
180 speed, 75 armor, 500 hull, 2 per wing
Warthog
130 speed, 200 armor, 750 hull, 3 per wing

Given their relative sizes and roles, I'd say the Gladius and the Broadswod should have their hull+speed stats inverted, possibly alongwith their OP cost, making the more heavily armed and visually larger Gladius the heavy fighter and the broadsword a regular one.

Does the Broadsword still have that Point defense lure system?

It is a bit odd that broadswords are tougher while being visually smaller, but I'm fairly happy with their performance as a shield assault fighter and bomber escort. A more OP expensive, 3/wing gladius at 200 speed with a bit more toughness would be an interesting heavy fighter. Lots of firepower there.

The proposed changes would be a pretty significant nerf to the Broadsword - a significant portion of its value comes from the fact that it can afford to linger on a target and apply substantial amounts of shield pressure.  Being faster doesn't especially help with that, but they'd definitely feel the loss of HP, and I don't think you're arguing that the Broadsword is overpowered.

The Gladius could use some help, though.  Thaago's idea is interesting, though then I'd be worried about it overlapping with the Warthog's role.

With the lower OP price the Gladius is a pretty decent interceptor - I have it + Talon on a Condor and the pair is good at hunting frigates, including remnant ones. Doesn't last long under heavy fire, but then again no interceptor does. I believe with my current midgame carrier fleet size its cruising speed is ~365, though they sometimes get faster when shifting in their formation.

Gladii are visually slightly larger, but the size difference between the two is not actually significant enough to say they must be tougher than the Broadsword.  IMO, the Broadsword looks like a "workhorse", a rugged design without a ton of accessories and bling, and the Gladius looks more like a "racehorse": Speedy and flashy but not necessarily tougher.

I still think Gladius should go back to what it used to be - a heavy assault fighter. That's what it looks like and it never quite settled in to its new role as a deceptively fast and fragile interceptor. Form should follow function right?

I also really don't like its single flare, IMO it should have proper flares or nothing - throwing out a single measly flare just doesn't make sense to me.
