Content Expansion - Gate Network
« on: February 02, 2021, 04:47:30 AM »

I was reading the lore on the main site, talking about the collapse of the gate network and how it fractured civilization and a thought popped into my head.  It's probably been talked about, but I couldn't find it (there's a lot of posts with "gate" in them).

When the player re-activates or uses a gate, they might have the option to catapult their fleet to long-lost worlds or completely alien landscapes.  In these remote locales, your fleet is all alone and against whatever might live there - organic space monsters, ancient crystalline ships, sentient insects, infernal hellscapes, etc.  The possibilities would be endless.

You go into the gate with whatever your fleet can carry, without any kind of support structure.  You don't know what's on the other side until you warp in.  You stay as long as you can and carry out whatever spoils you acquire, from technology that can't be reproduced to unique ships or special officers with unique skills.  You never return to the same remote space twice.  Activating the gates for these trips could be quests in themselves or cost prohibitive so players don't just return over and over and over.

The risk is in potentially leaving yourself stranded in an alien world with no way home (hope you made a good save first), but the rewards could be great.

I'd pay for something like that as a DLC content expansion.

I feel that somehow conflict with Starsector aesthetic, what make Starsector scary is you're not fighting alien or unknown power, you're fighting your fellow mankind with their own ideology or without ideology at all because why not? When you go to the outer rim, you don't fighting greentide orks, you're fighting AI remnant, a reminder of Tri-tachyon hubris. The biggest problem Persean Sector has it is own inhabitant.

Not to mention the lore of individual planet or polity. It's an interesting reading if you take your time. A King that act as ruler and entertainer in one of the miner colony under Persean Sector is my favorite.

Also about alien life, the terra or many habitable planets is actually a product from the Domain mighty terraforming drone ship. One mother ship can continuously terraform entire Starsystem by themselves with few exception like that one gas giant with proto life in that Church starsystem.

And about the gate, the Hegemony with try to reactivate it for more than 150 years, I doubt we as the player has what it take to reactivate it.

Adding alien into the Starsector will make it similar to others 30 billion copies of science fiction out there, replace the Alien with other polity under Domain on the other sector with their own lore and background, now we're talking. Will they fighting each other like Persean Sector did? Or they successfully make themselves a Domain successor?

I love Starsector as it is, a grounded Spacepunk experience. But hey. it's just my opinion.

I like the idea.  Might not fit snugly into vanilla's scope though.

Plot twist: The Domain didn't really fall apart. They just disabled the gates in our sector, and are observing us through their probes as a social experiment.

Anyway, I think it's best for the lore to take the "Dune" route, where after all these conflicts and expansion, humanity is still alone fighting against themselves. I like the idea about reactivating the gates though; perhaps it could be a way to start a new game plus or something.
