I'm fairly new to the game. I've spent a few hours playing vanilla, and I'm loving the game so far, but I'm also very curious to explore the expansive modding scene. What kind of mods would you guys recommend to expand or enhance the game?

Nexerelin adds a lot, so it might not be for you yet, but it makes Starsector more like a 4x game, with invasions, diplomacy, spies(agents), and some other stuff.
On the faction side a good introduction mod is Scalartech Solutions.

They are a fast high-tech faction, with some good weapons, and fitting their ships isn't too complicated.

For a expansion of vanilla ships, Ship and Weapon pack has lot's of good vanilla-adjacent ships, but similar to Nexerelin it is a lot for newer players. Another good mod would be Torchships and Deadly Armaments, which is full of nice balanced ships.

For most mods, you'll need to also download and activate these libraries, or the other mods won't work:
GraphicsLib:

(Also for this one, you might want to change the settings of the mod, because this adds all kind of graphics and lighting and stuff. Here's a link to my guide for that https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=19597.0)
LazyLib:

MagicLib:

Finally, for stupid, unbalanced, but really fun, there's Kingdom of Terra. This faction whacks, smacks, and pushes other ships, instead of just using weapons. If that isn't enough, there is a ship that is a giant T Rex skull, that chomps ships.

Oh also there are a ton of utility mods, but you should only use them if you have a problem with something.

The following video was made by a veteran. He really has great advice for first time mods & how to prepare for mods.

Recommended utility-ish mods:
Automatic Orders - lets you set ships to, for example, automatically retreat when they get close to running out of CR. All-but-mandatory if you want to use frigates or destroyers in late-game fights.
Console Commands - very useful for recovering from buggy situations - not a common problem in vanilla, but once you start adding mods there can be occasional issues. Also useful for customizing your starting fleet, though Nex also offers some decent options there too.
More Officer Skills - gives you more choices when leveling officers.
Unknown Skies - adds extra variety to planets & exploration content.
Starship Legends - adds random traits to specific ships as they do well (or poorly) in combat. (Or just at random for civilian hulls.) For me, this functions like a replacement of the old crew progression, allowing ships I've had for a while to be just a bit better than a generic hull would be.

Nexerelin is neat, but also generally makes the game harder. Has a lot of configuration options if you're willing to go messing about with its files, though, and it's possible to turn off the "player faction diplomacy" option that results in AI factions randomly becoming more hostile over time.

For general adding-of-ships, I'd suggest:
Ship & Weapon Pack
Underworld
Tahlan Shipworks
Seeker

For actual faction mods, my favorites include:
Dassault-Mikoyan Engineering
Interstellar Imperium
Blackrock Driveyards
Outer Rim Alliance
Sylphon R&D
Legacy of Arkgneisis
Diable Avionics
Shadowyards

Did a search, found this: http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=16544.0

I think that's the right mod?  Been a while.

Thanks! I used the search for "More Officer Skills" and got tons of garbage results.
