Instant CTD's, on Save, Load
« on: November 10, 2020, 06:06:51 PM »

Hi,
The following might be a study in greed but I seemed to be better able to do this a few months ago, which makes me wonder if drivers are the problem, since that's all I can see that's changed, apart from a smattering of new mods.

Having reinstalled starsector, I was attempting to get a modded game going with at least 40-50 mods. Nothing I did seems to to help the game's reliability in much of a significant way at all.
I tried many different suggestions read on this forum and the starsector reddit, hoping for a simple fix, but it seems my mod greed could not be sustained. The crashes were not 100% reliable, but if I managed to load into the campaign, I was almost certain to crash the first time I quicksaved, which was even more frustrating.

I tried to curb my gluttony of mods, getting that list down to 35-40 mods, which seems to have helped, a bit, although I'm hoping I won't have to give any more the chop (Maybe unreasonably)
I can usually start a new game now and save maybe one time, but by the second time I get the same freeze for a few seconds when I hit F5, followed by an instant CTD.

My system specs can be found here, with the only change being that I have upgraded to 2 sticks of 8gb ram (16) instead on a single 8gb stick. The 2gb VRAM should probably be noted:
https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GL72M-7RDX/Specification

As for things I have tried:

1. Using Process Lassoo to prioritize Starsector and Java
2. Using Razer Game Booster to free up some extra RAM
3. Various Graphicslib tweakings - Disabling, enabling different settings, using the Craptop preset, setting EnableShaders to false altogether.
4. Turning off Vsync in settings.ini
5. Some disabling and enabling of various mods. Probably not extensive.
6 Setting processMessagesWhileSavingOrLoading to false.

Here is the last chunk of my starsector.log: https://pastebin.com/DdSADbjK

My activated mods, all latest verion:
Adjusted Sector
Another Portrait Pack
Autosave
Better Colonies
Blackrock Drive Yards
Cari's UI
Concordance of Protection Syndicate (COPS)
Console Commands
Dassault-Mikoyan Engineering
Diable Avionics
Fluff Ship Pack
Hazard Mining Incorporated
Hyperdrive
Interesting Portraits Pack
Interstellar Imperium
Lazylib
Legacy of Arkgenisis
MagicLib
More HullMods
Neutrino Corporation
Nexerelin
Outer Rim Alliance
Planetary Shield : Access Control
Scalartech Solutions
Scy Nation
Shadowyards
Skilledup
Speedup
Stellar Logistics
Sylphon RnD
Tiandong Heavy Industries
Transfer all Items
Unknown Skies
Varya's Sector
Version Checker
Xhan Empire
ZZ Graphicslib
prv Starworks

My gut feeling is that this has to do with the latest Nvidia Drivers, but I really have no idea. Various things I tried seemed to maybe have a marginal effect, but nothing really came close to putting the issue to sleep.
Thanks in advance for any advice and I'll try to answer any posts ASAP

With two gigs of VRAM, you are probably running out.
Starsector preloads assets, and you have way too many memory intensive mods there for your rig.

The fact that there is no stack trace also points to this.

Try running the Vram Estimator and trim your modlist.

Alright, thanks. I thought maybe having plenty of RAM would offset the lack of VRAM somewhat, since I read that there was a mechanism for dumping some of the workload to normal RAM. Maybe I was mistaken

Using the VRAM estimator, I trimmed down my modlist to ~1.5gb vram usage, as indicated by the estimates on the batch file. Seems to be working perfect, and I didn't have to compromise as much as I assumed. Thanks a lot!
