More Tri-Tachyon Variants!
« on: October 28, 2020, 09:29:46 PM »

The Brawler is the only TT variant hull at present. Now to be fair there's not that many other midlines that can be meaningfully Tri-Tachified, but humour me for a bit.

Brawler (TT)
It needs more! Instead of Insulated Engine Assembly, it should have Flux Coil Adjunct and Flux Distributor built-in so it can actually use lower-effiency medium energy weapons. And yes the Brawler is getting a flux buff in the next patch, but a variant reliant on energy weapons should still have better flux stats than a baseline ballistic.

Sunder (TT)
Yes it's basically a high tech ship already. Give it a blue paintjob, change the small ballistics to small energies, and make Advanced Optics built-in. Essentially this version of the Sunder is encouraged to use beams, particularly since it cannot use railguns to support the 700-range large energy weapons.

Heron (TT)
Change the medium universal to a medium energy and make Advanced Optics built-in. Yes it's almost the same change as to the Sunder, but it brings the Heron in-line with the Astral (which also has Advanced Optics built-in...). The overall idea is that larger Tri-Tach ships, if they aren't speedsters, tend to be more stand-offish. It's also an excuse to give a main Tri-Tach workhorse a blue paintjob.

As for other Tri-Tachable midlines...

Drover is the other major ship in the Tri-Tach lineup that can be painted blue, but there really isn't much you can do with it that would be meaningfully different from the base variant. Perhaps it could just have a paintjob and nothing else.

The Hammerhead, Falcon and Eagle are problematic to convert because they overlap too much with other ships in the same class. An energy Hammerhead would just be a weaker Sunder, and energy Falcons/Eagles would just be overarmed-yet-underfluxed Aurorae.

Other midline frigates (and also the Gryphon) suffer from the same problem as the Drover. Either there's nothing that can be changed meaningfully, or they're antithesis to Tri-Tach doctrine (the Centurion in particular).

Yes please! And more variants for the Diktat, too. And every faction, for that matter.
Diktat variants should have higher burn and speed while also using up more fuel.

I think having built-in Solar Shielding for the Diktat would be more fun for me, they would kind of be the exploration/[REDACTED] variant for other ships

...And more variants for the Diktat...

Diktat variants are from a mod. Ships and weapons pack i think?

More skins/variants in vanilla does seem like an interesting and *relatively* low effort way to diversify things a bit and add some character though, as long as they're well thought out.

Heron as-is could easily be a high-tech or (TT) ship if color was swapped to blue.  It already uses mostly energy weapons, and it is shaped more like a high-tech ship than a midline ship.  The only thing that different is the color.

However, I would not mind a theoretical Heron (TT) becoming a super Wolf.  If its medium was changed to energy or synergy, I would want to use a heavy blaster in the mount.  Swap its system to Phase Skimmer, restore the speed it originally had, and maybe raise either OP or flux stats so it can comfortably support a blaster and take hits on the shield while it brawls (and fighters seek-and-destroy cowardly enemy ships).

I like new skins in general, but I really don't want faction skins to just be "like the original, but better"  unless it's an "elite" version, like the XIV ships, SWP's Lion's Guard, or theoretical Knights of Ludd models.

So basically:

TT Brawler: No to the free hullmods.  Possibly a small buff to flux stats at most (if the TT's version is not getting buffed along with the standard Brawler).

TT Sunder: No to the free Adv. Optics, energy-fying the smalls is fine though.

TT Heron: Again, no to the free Adv. Optics, that's just a straight-up buff.  There's not a ton left to change that could differentiate it, but maybe it doesn't have to.

TT Drover: Swap small mounts from ballistics to energies.  Simple.

TT Falcon, Eagle: There's no real need for those (Aurora and the new high-tech light cruiser already exist), but if we were to give them TT skins anyways, swap ship system from maneuvering jets to plasma jets.  Gives it less agility, but more speed.

Changing ballistic or universal slots to energy is a nerf though. I think the idea of the built in hull mods was to try and balance them back to the original ships strength after they loose some combat power by being given inferior energy mounts. Not sure how it would work out exactly, but having the ships be 'the original but worse' is also kinda unfun.

I don't think any of my suggestions are "like original but better". I think we can all agree that ballistic weapons > energy weapons in general, yes?

The current TT Brawler doesn't have the flux stats to support energy weapons, making it an overall nerf compared to baseline. Giving it free flux hullmods is "a small buff to flux stats" exactly as what you're saying. The reason it has to be done this way is because variant skins don't support changes to flux stats.

TT Sunder not being able to use railguns or small needlers is a pretty heavy nerf. Yes in terms of beam Sunder my TT variant is a pure buff, but the idea here is the TT variant is more specialised as a long-ranged supporter rather than a mid-ranged energy brawler.

Ditto to TT Heron not being able to use medium ballistics/missiles.

TT Falcon/Eagle with plasma jets is why I said those ships shouldn't have TT variants... it makes them far too similar (and dare I say superior) to the Aurora.

Exactly.
