One small step- complete the tutorial
That's no moon- discover an abandoned space station.
You sunk my battleship- lose a battleship in combat.
Little green men- use space marines to attack a planet.
Where Everyone was Gone Before- discover a colony ship full of brain-dead passengers in stasis.
No one can Hear you scream- hunt down and kill a bounty
Kessel run- travel 11.9 parsecs ingame
Damn! Those torpedoes...- destroy a ship with a mine. (in reference to Vice Adm. David Farragut, mines were called torpedoes during his time.)
It's a tap!- destroy an enemy ship by ramming.

I do not want achievements if it means content is locked until some of those achievements are checked off.  This is one of the few things I really dislike about DoomRL.

A laundry list of achievements to do is annoying grinding when combined with locked content that is unlocked by completing some achievements.

That is not the idea of most of the 'Steam Achievements' that I know of. They are just some extra recognition you get for doing stuff in game, nothing is blocked until you reach certain achievements.

Few more ideas:
I've been everywhere man - mapped all solar systems.
No more secrets - surveyed every planet in the galaxy.
Why build one when you can have two at twice the price - build two of the same class of capital ships on your colony.
Monophobia - travel to 6 solar systems without encountering any other fleets.

Alex actually mentioned achievements on Steam in an interview yesterday (link on his twittter) and I share his thoughts. Either you have A) achievements that force players to grind something, use weird strats, risk everything and frustrate themselves or B) things you just get along the way for doing the most basic stuff in game. The former way drives some people to complete the game 100% which may impact their view on the game in the end (I hate this in team based MP games where it hurts to have a player who's completing achievements and ruining the game), and the latter thing is pointless, it's just virtual pats on the back.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind them when they're not ridiculous, but the thing that'll always be a negative for me is their impact on gameplay.

Agreed. I think they are more of a badge of "I played this game more than you" at best and an outright content lock for no particular reason at worst. While I like the feeling of completing achievements as a whole, the downside is that they kind of force you into this mindset of having to get all the achievements to feel relevant. While that may have a place in a competitive multiplayer game, it only serves to add frustration or a feeling of inadequacy in a game where the focus is a fun experience. That, to me, is Starsector's draw.

A good example is some achievements from Command and Conquer. Build 500 Tanks or w.e shouldn't be something I do for the achievement, but rather something I want to do because it makes sense from a gameplay perspective. If I feel forced to do it in order to earn the achievement, it doesn't result in me having fun it results in me min/maxing my experience in a competitive way that has no relevance in a non-competitive format.

My introduction to so-called achievements was DoomRL.  I do not use or play on Steam.

Totally agreed.  Never liked achievements as implemented in modern games.  I do not mind stuff like "secrets" in early FPS games that result in in-game rewards, or cute easter eggs like the classic hidden gray pixel that granted access to a secret room in Atari 2600's Adventure.

Agreed for those that do not block content.

It's sort of nice when they are for things that are non-trivial so that there is a sense of accomplishment, but also not anti-gameplay where you have to do something unfun to get them. I usually just don't do achievements that don't sound enjoyable, but I guess some people feel compelled to get that shiny 100%.

This is true in games where content is locked behind achievements, like in DoomRL.

Ridiculous achievements are not fun.  DoomRL had a few like take 10,000 damage for Iron Skull (requires Vampire, in marine class) or RNG ones that require random rare drops to get.

A lot of good achievements ideas posted here, well done!  :)

Achievements can be used in good and bad ways.

Have you guys played Into the Breach? The game itself is a masterpiece, and achievements are very well integrated: basically the reward for getting achievements is “coins” which lets the player unlock squads. So the player needs to be proficient enough with the base squad in order to gain access to other squads, and so on. Generally speaking I think it is a smart way to implement achievements and use them as a player progression tool, and it suits this game very well.

Risk of Rain is another great game which use achievements to unlocks items. IIRC sometimes it felt a bit grindy, but for the most part it was organic enough.

Whether they are used for progression or not, achievement are, well, a clear signal sent to the player telling him/her: well played! Some people like this, some don’t, others don’t care. There is also the social thing, especially on Steam and Game Center on iOS: whoaa my friend reached milestone XYZ in that game.

Last but not least, let’s not be fools in this “game”: achievements are a telemetry tools used by many studios/publishers to know what players do in their games. Did they beat the first boss? Did they choose A or B when facing that important decision? Did they find the secret area? And so on.

I've never cared about achievements.  They actually have them for nonbranching visual novels on Steam, which is pretty funny.  However, I did like Badass Points in Borderlands 2, aside from the ones that were co-op only.  There were never necessary and only marginally useful, but always made "just playing the game" feel like progress even when you didn't find any good loot.  And many of them, like dealing X damage with an elemental shield, made you play the game in interesting alternative ways that you might have otherwise ignored or overlooked as "not optimal".

I generally agree that any achievements which lock gameplay content (limit the ways you can play the game) are bad. If they just lock cosmetic content, then I usually don't care. Tbh, it doesn't sound like that is the intent of this post or Alex though, so I don't think you need to worry.

I have played both Into the Breach and Risk of Rain 2. Might as well count FTL there too since the devs did pretty much the same thing as in Into the Breach. Which is gating content (actual gameplay) behind achievements. And sure some of those are pretty easy and you may unlock them accidentally, but some are a royal pain. Not everyone has dozens of hours of free time just to grind something so you can play with the full game.

All of these are great games, so this is the only thing I dislike about them. If you really wanna gate something so a first time player doesn't have a bunch of options just have ''unlocks after completing run with x''. Like in Slay the Spire, simple and painless.

Anyways if Starsector somehow gets any type of achievements, I pray to Zeus it won't be the like of ''Win a battle vs 10 capitals while flying in a Hound'' nonsense just to unlock a ship or weapon or who knows what. Basically anything that ties into gameplay.

EDIT: Yeah I figured this is not what OP was proposing, still I'm just giving my 2 cents.
