Starsector launch issues.

Hi there. I need some help because Starsector is not launching anymore.

For some reason starsector is not launching anymore (it used to launch properly in the past). It doesn't even go to the initial prelaunch menu where you can select mods and other things. The icon shows up in the task bar most of the times though. I've tried reinstalling the game and deleting everything in the mod folder. I didn't find any  _JAVA_OPTIONS under system variables like the other people having issues. The only thing that changed since my last succesful launch is that I changed my graphics card to a  Radeon RX 570. Drivers are up to date.

Hmm - could you try editing data/config/settings.json, and setting "legacyLauncher" to true? That might get you a little further along, at least, and could possibly let you run the game.

It's hard to say what's going on, exactly - as you can probably see, there's unfortunately nothing too informative going on in the log. I want to say it's probably a driver issue, or interaction with some other software that's running at the same time. Did you install new drivers for the card? If not, then that's for sure worth a shot.

Re: other software, if you're running MSI Afterburner or ROG STRIX GPU Tweak II monitor, these are known to cause problems.

Oh, also! Someone recently pointed out that disabling windows 7 aero effects can resolve what looks to be a similar issue:

Thanks for your help. I was running MSI afterburner, and disabled it. That did nothing for my problem. When I changed my windows theme to basic, I was suddenly able to see the launcher that was invisible before. How fortunate that both of the things you mentioned were things I had going on! If this is a regular issue, maybe consider putting a check in the launcher if MSI afterburner is running to inform the user that it might cause issues.

Glad that did it!

Not a bad idea re: having a check, but it seems like it'd be tricky to do in a way that was guaranteed to work even if, say, some things re: MSI Afterburner changed. Plus I'm not actually sure whether it causes problems in all cases, some cases, or depending on its settings, or... well. It's basically an unknown, so a warning may actually be too broad of a thing and scare some people where it'd be fine, if that makes sense.
