Help with Linux setup
« on: July 24, 2020, 08:32:38 AM »

When I started playing this game (and loving it) I thought it strange that the FPS was so low but my card wasn't even struggling. Turns out that I'm one of those unfortunate AMD card owners (RX 5700) that can't leverage their gfx card for this game because of *** OpenGL drivers.

So I am trying to set up an Ubuntu environment, specifically to be able to play this game with good FPS. What I have currently done is create a live Ubuntu 18.04 LTS live flashcard with data persistence, on a 16G flash drive. Now I'm trying to find out what driver packages to install. The information on the Internet is very unhelpful, there's no simple guide like "for X card, install Y packages".
A wrinkle, my gaming computer is not the same computer I use for setting up/downloading packages, so any autodetect-and-install methods will almost certainly not work. Assume that my gaming computer will never be connected to the Internet.

Is there anyone here with strong Linux-fu that can help me, please?

Hello,

1. Why your gaming computer would not be connected to the internet?

How did you plan to keep it up to date?

2. I have found the following on the AMD site:

https://www.amd.com/fr/support/previous-drivers/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-amdgpu-unified-navi-linux

I, have, foudn that article too, maybe some interesting pointers for you: https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/radeon-rx-5700-drivers-black-screen-fix

As I understand it, the Mesa open source drivers remain recommended for gaming.

For Ubuntu, I found this (look under the Open Source section in particular)

However, you should give a try with the one provided by AMD. If it didn't work, you will will be able to uninstall it. You have nothing to loose.

Else, I don't think I will be of much help, I don't use Ubuntu and I don't use AMD product so far.
