[Q] Ground Combat
« on: March 26, 2012, 03:07:14 PM »

Will there be ground combat in the game?
(Example: Landing on a Planet to harvest resources and build stations, but are being attacked by enemy factions/wildlife and etc.

I don't think there will, as Starfarer is a space combat game, and i have never heard of ground combat in it before.

Why would you need to fight on the ground when you have a cruiser in orbit? If someone on the planet does not do what you want them to do, just glass the area and ask the next guy 20 miles further. At some point they will start to do what you want.

I assume there will eventually be some form of atmospheric mining operations. I mean we see enemy ships disappear into gas planets, so it's not too far a stretch I don't think. But ground combat ruined Star Trek online no reason to think it wouldn't ruin this game too.

While upper atmosphere combat would be cool perhaps with areas of the map that would be nebula replaced with ground fire that'd cause DoT rather than a slow effect i don't think having ground combat would be a good idea, game has such great ship combat let it focus on that.

Perhaps a bit more control over things like boarding or if there is planetary invasion having options would be nice, but no direct control of you shooting guns at other people.

Actually, you might be able to simulate hovercraft or antigrav vehicle combat simply by changing the background to a physical terrain and anchoring asteroids in place to act as rocks and boulders.  The only thing remaining would be some appropriate vehicle images.

Might be a cool feature to an expansion pack down the road, if Alex ever decides he wants to do one.

i don't think it would be a necessary feature to add... if you just want more backgrounds (like a planet for example) a mod will come out for it. but the vanilla should focus on space combat and managing space facilities to keep it grounded. (see what i did there? ;D)

I wouldn't mind ground combat in starfarer if it were handled like boarding operations, it's just a matter of bringing enough marines and hoping for the best. Perhaps you could also have ground vehicles that work like marines only more powerful. They would take up cargo space instead of crew space. So if you wanted to invade a settled planet, you'd go out and buy a bunch of freighters and crew transports and recruit a few hundred marines and buy a couple dozen tanks to dump onto the planet. Then when you get to the planet, you select the "Invade" option, and it works out the winner.

I would prefer ground battle, but not in that way. I'd actully like it if it were like boarding actions, if they could improve the boarding action to include in the middle of the battle, like In sots 1.

Tractor beams for high-tech? Good old harpoons or nets for low-tech?

Harpoon launchers as in harppons that stick themselves to a ship which then is dragged closer to the firing ship and then gets boraded using extended airlocks? Yeah, that's my thought 8)

Magnets? What's wrong with your good old armour piercing hookshot? If you're going with the oldies but goodies, you may as well make them as brutal as possible :P
