getting a sound error then loads the game then crashes. uninstalled game then downloaded newest release but that didn't help. read that this same error has to do with mods but I've turned all of them off.

Hi - could you post what the error is? If you open up starsector.log right after it crashes, there should be a stack trace towards the end.

how do i find the starsector.log

Assuming the game is installed in the default location, it should be in this folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Fractal Softworks\Starsector\starsector-core

doesn't look like I have it closest i have is log4j-1.2.9.jar

You might have file extensions turned off.

Yep, that looks like the error - thank you!

Could you take a look in the stickied Troubleshooting thread? It has a section on this issue, "The game crashes when run with sound on, "Fatal: null", "Error in sound initialization", "org.lqjgl.openal.AL10.nalDistanceModel(I)V"", a couple of sections down.

running as admin seems to work does that mean always run admin

Probably, yeah. Unless you're able to sort out what makes this necessary - the game doesn't *generally speaking* require that, but I'm not sure what specifically in your configuration is causing it.

wasn't on the game for a month or two ran it with mods on. got the error after that. thought the mods caused the error so i turned them off. then all this happened.

Yeah, that line of thinking makes sense, I'd probably try the same thing first myself. But it looks like something else changed on your system - possibly an automated update of something or other, or new software installed that changed something, etc...
