Whats your favorite capital ship
« on: February 26, 2020, 08:13:56 AM »

So, we found favorite weapons, lets talk about capitals right now.

I cant remember all capitals from mods, so, votes only for vanilla, but feel free to mention modded capitals if you think, that one you mention is not OP, but good enough at the same time and deserves to be in the vanilla.

Imo, Victory from weapons&ships pack looks nice and is able to fill empty midline slot.

The mighty onslaught. Brings it's own guns to the fight just in case you can't afford any.  8)

Onslaught for Armo, style and in the hands of a reckless Ai the tendency to go Leroy Jenkins into a fleet.   Somehow he always survived.  Likely due to having every defensive skill including damage control and advance countermeasures. All 5.

Legion 14th because I like to punch while swarming at the same time.

Atlas.... well I like trading.

I used to like Odyssey, but controlling it and its fighters in combat is really cumbersome. It's too much for me. I prefer Conquest now, because it's similarly mobile, but more straightforward, while being no less powerful.

Legion.  So many fun builds in part to it being it's own mobile fleet center.

Definitely Onslaught (XIV). Pretty durable and mobile, has insane firepower (and great turret angles, allowing it to pressure 3-5 targets simultaneously), almost immune to flanking, fighters, missiles, etc. The only thing it needs to mindlessly stomp any resistance is some sort of screening from multiple enemy ships and any form of long range kinetic pressure (an Apogee and a pair of Herons w/ Longbows are the best options).

Just like with weapons I can't really say I have a favourite. More of that every capital has features I don't like. Astral and Paragon are boring and slow, but powerful. Conquest is awkward to personally pilot and AI Conquest fights funny. Onslaught is a contradiction of oscillating design philosphies. It wants to face forward with its fixed mounts but also do a Conquest to fight with its turrets. At the same time it is designed to have a vulnerable rear to be fun to fight against. AI Odyssey has a tendency to suicide as it is relatively short ranged. Legion presents a legion of choices so in that manner it is nice. Favourite can mean many different things anyways. I suppose it is a triumph of design that I cannot say there is a capital that I definitely prefer and think is overwhelmingly best to use.

For some stupid reason original Atlas is the rarest ship in entire Universe. Looks like, pirates stole and refit every single one.

In my first run i was lucky enough to get a blueprint of original Atlas (but was not smart enough to know that i will want one). Never seen any Atlases in blueprint form or in trade after that.

Odyssey. !00% Odyssey. Set it up with MIRV's, Sabot pods, Xyphos, and Tachlances/Plasma cannons and wreck havoc on the enemies rear

I put down Legion and Odyssey - with the Odyssey skating in on the question being "favorite" not "most-used".  I like the Odyssey, but I don't consider it to be a very good ship at the moment.

The Legion, though?  Burn drive works well enough for not being as sluggish as the Paragon, and - unlike the Onslaught - it's relatively easy to set it up with weaponry/fighters that just work without requiring you to carefully manage flux or awkward firing arcs.

The XIV Legion is overall slightly worse than the regular Legion... but it's a lot better at taking down stations; load it up with Hammer Barrage launchers and expanded missile racks.

Why would XIV Legion be worse than regular legion when it has more OP, more flux, and more armor in addition to 0 flux intensive large mounts in exchange for 2 0 flux Large missiles

I put dawn Atlas Mk.II it is not a goodCapital, by any means, but it is one powerfull ship when you are suposed to get it, it just need Augumented Drive Field to get to burn 8.

I also put dawn Odyssey, this thing has a combat speed of 70su, which means it can outmacht the speed of half of the ships, in fact the only ships this thing fears are Paragon, which turns as fast as Odyssey turns around it, Radiant, because Remnant teconology, and The Guardian, which is a lone wolf.

Legion(XIV) is a very hard to fit, it can match the carrier power of the Astral, but it needs to be in the front line for it to work, and the ship needs perfect conditions for it's guns, while normal Legion can just snipe using Gauss

Just stick 3 heavy needlers on front, 2 hurricanes in the large missile slots.  After that tweak the PD and Fighters (I liked interceptors) to your liking.  With a proper pilot, ECCM and it's a great 1-2 puncher that wrecks.

I like both Legions, but the Legion XIV is much more straightforward to build to me: just slap on fighters and guns and missiles and kill things. It handily supports the best kinetic weapon (Heavy Needlers) in far forward mounts, the best point defense (dual flaks), and can then mount really whatever large missile fits the role of what you need. (Early game? Dual locusts mince pirates. Station busting? Hammers or Cyclones. Etc.)

The regular legion has a lot of complicated design decisions, not the least of which is which of those medium mounts to use as missiles and which to use as guns. Using them all as missiles gives a massive flux free BANG, but it means only having the small and large ballistic mounts available for point defense and main guns: no flak (most likely) and either low efficiency or low range kinetics (set in far back mounts as well). Some Legion builds can be very effective specialists (like a Gauss + Annihilator capital duelist), but those builds come with downsides as well. So while Legions are certainly effective, they are also hard to build well.

Legion is my favorite to play as, Paragon is my favorite if I want to feel god-like, and Odyssey is the one I like best in theory even if I don't use it all that often.

The Legion is just super-versatile. It hits like a truck, has 4 wings for whatever purpose your guns don't fill and can take a beating, too. The XIV variant has a much lower flux profile but I tend to like the normal version with a Hellbore and Mk. IX for general-purpose murdering. The only thing I don't like is that I have to get both Combat and Leadership/Carrier skills for myself and/or Officers to really maximize it.

Paragon is the most formidable ship in the game, bar none. It has more power and staying power than anything and though I don't find it particularly fun to pilot, I absolutely use it as my flagship against enemy stations.

Odyssey is a jack-of-all trades ship that is fairly nimble and I like having the fighters along with a few Large Energy mounts. I'm not a big fan of the broadside-style ships but I can make it work.
