For what purposes do you use Combat Points in battle?
« on: January 29, 2020, 02:46:18 AM »

Hello everyone. Just wondering, for what you can use CP? Like, ye, i know that i can give orders to certain ships, etc. I'm just interested, like, do somebody preparing some formations with it? Because all that i use them for now is to just select what ship to eliminate and what ship to retreat. I'm asking this because i'm interested in it's, you know, sort of capability? Like, can i use it to create some interesting formations or something like that. Not just order one ship to fly around another. So, anyway, do you guys are managing something like this, or just give some simple orders and then return to command your flagship? I'm really curios in this and want to know, can i do something more effective then just give some simple orders. Thanks in advance!

Most of my orders are to herd my fleet into one spot, so that it doesn't get stretched too thin. I sometimes order an elimination order or two, if I feel my fleet will handle it safely. The most I've ever done is placing a bunch of engage and avoid orders in a tough battle, to try and dictate which ships are important to take out and which aren't, but I can't say how effective it was, because most often I'm too busy flying my own ship to actually check what my fleet is up to.

I like to spread my ships out forward in a broad line, then cancel the waypoints, so they have freedom to move around. Then I pay constant attention, pausing if needed, to monitor what all the ships are doing and what they are facing, telling them to move back early if needed or to eliminate a target or cancel an elimination order. This is a rathe heavy use of CP so it only really becomes viable with Command & Control 2 skill and as using a CP gives a short period of time for unlimited commands you may need to choose when to give commands when you can give the most or most useful commands.

But it depends. For instance if the ships deployed are a relatively immobile fleet like an Astral Paragon combo, I prefer to tell them to escort each other or defend a waypoint or some other point so they can stick together and only order a group of fighter strikes on a single target at a time.

You really can't create formations in the clasical sense, but you can tell them to defend points in ahead of another, or move to areas of a battlefield by telling them to goto a waypoint far ahead of a location then cancelling it once they reached the spot you want them to go to and escort orders now have the escorting ship tending to stay at the rear of the escorted ship. If you tell ships to go to/capture/defend a waypoint they still roam around a fair bit but they try to stay within a certain range (about 2000?) so they don't chase outside of that range. They also would not suicidally try to execute that order unless they are naturally suicidal. Just be aware that orders are stacked on locations/ships, so if you tell the ship that was executing that order to do something else, the game will select other available ships to execute that order and this may also be multiple ships at that.

I like setting the fleet up before engagement in a formation.   This is achieved simply by setting several defensive waypoints. Battleships front,  carriers back,  frigates and destroyers on sides.

Individual ships can be set to escort others if needed.

As long as I set it up before contact my fleet will generally hold formation and also overextend less.  If I want them to push more I remove and create new waypoints as necessary.  Once I figured this out I enjoyed commanding my fleet way more and it's usually not CP intensive if set up right.

Plus if you need to give the fleet free movement again just click full assault on and off.

Defensive waypoint at the start of a battle if I'm outnumbered or outgunned.

Occasional "Assault" orders on targets that are vulnerable (but AI doesn't realise it).

Save one or two for "Retreats" if needed.

If combat will be multi-round, I order biggest and slowest ship (usually Astral) to escort my flagship, then order the rest of my fleet to escort the first slowpoke, and I drive my flagship to the edge to force my entire fleet to edge-camp, since rally points cannot be set closer than one big square to the edge, but I need my fleet to stay near the edge, and having ships escort my ship is the only way to force them to edge-camp.  Then I wait for the enemy to come, and I fight until it is time to full retreat due to too many ships running out of PPT.

In single-round combat, I have Dooms and capitals escort my ship.  If I have carriers too, they rally about a big square away from the front line.

In general, I try to save CP for emergency retreat orders for ships that run out of PPT or take too much damage.

P.S.  Sometimes, I toggle Full Assault on and off during fights, and that costs CP at some step.

I used to do: 1 CP at the start to set up escort orders (ctrl groups make that very quick) and give an assault order on whichever objective I want to make a stand at (assault automatically turns into defend once the objective is yours, very CP efficient), a handful for the occasional eliminate/fighter strike order and save 1-2 for retreat commands.

Eventually I stopped really using Eliminate (too risky, situations change too quickly to make it that useful) and now I play with the automatic orders mod so I can set up escorts and retreats in the refit screen and don't have to re-do it ever fight.
