Starbases - Protect objectives in battle
« on: March 19, 2012, 09:38:45 PM »

I love Master of Orion II - one of my favorite moments I ever had with it was when I first got a fleet put together that could ace enemy starbases (for those who never played, they were stationary platforms that served as shipyards and had a little better than a cruiser's worth of firepower). This got me thinking: it would be really cool if on some missions or campaign battles we had stationary stations, either armed or not, that we had to protect from the enemy force. I can just imagine having a base armed with a bunch of light ballistics and a flight deck, fighters whizzing around... (wasps attacking it in circeles as science station hermes goes down... erm, nevermind). Anywho, just my idle daydreams.

We've allready seen from the missions that you can make certain ships lose on loss and the normal AI looks like it would work just fine for controlling shields and weapons. The only real thing separating a station from a ship of 0 speed is the 50 speed 0 flux bonus and the need to deploy (at least as far as I know). Thoughts?

A targetable stationary structure would likely be extremely vulnerable to bombers and LRMs without some serious PD, shield, flux and armor magic. However this is only depends on implementation as stations doesn't need to move, and nothing stops them from having monstrous amount of armor, flux capacity, and/or a even better Integrated Targeting Unit to even things out.

Sounds good.

We will eventually get to have stations in battle. IIRC, alex tried to squeeze them in 0.5 but decided that the implementation at the time was too glitchy or incomplete or something and shelved it for later, but it will get done eventually, since there will be stations both you and the AI will be able to have.

technically stations would need to move a little bit, not enough to really be effective in combat maneuvers but enough to keep themselves from literally falling out of orbit of a planet. A deep space station may not have to move as much but you never know.

for combat abilities a station should be unparalleled just not above to move, its flux capacity and vents should literally be through the roof shields would have to be 360 degrees IMO, armor ridiculously tough, weaponry would need to be mostly PD i imagine or have many pd weapons and a few large turret mounts, or a lot of medium turret mounts. Like these monsters should only be field able for controlling planets and should only really be susceptible to either very large or very specialized fleets. now that would be like war stations like something that would orbit a Core world.

Now a station you would use to control an asteroid field for mining purposes would have to be less powerful otherwise you could just leave them alone to defend themselves alex himself said he would want you to be forced to defend your own mining outposts or risk loosing them having great stomping death stations for mining would be OP, now my real question is WHO IS BUILDING THESE AND HOW?! did they already exist from the Domain's time?

There are already sprites in the art folders for space stations. If you look through the core starfarer pixel art directory you will find station pieces.

I would be surprised if station attack and defense missions were not implemented at some point... soonish

@JWNoctis, did you ever try the mod that adds the Oort? It is basically a mobile battlestation. Super slow but a ton of PD weapons and some rather large ones as well. Also has a good shield. It is very tough to take out even with bombers/missiles. I'm thinking a space station would be like that, but just can't move (should be able to spin though).

There can be a lot of different stations, and they don't need to all be incredibly tough. Stations can fit a lot of roles like trade, orbital ship construction, or even habitation besides being military installations. Of course, a frontline military base would be tough, but some random trade station in a relatively safe system would probably not be built for combat, and thus should be able to be taken down easily by a moderately sized fleet. Of course, blowing up defenseless civilians will probably not make you very popular.

well that depends on the factions now wouldn't it? i imagine pirates wouldn't mind you doing that to their enemies, i could also see the hegemony loving you for blowing up or better taking over a TT trade station/ orbital shipyard.
Other than that i totally agree with there being multiple types of stations, and honestly i really want one that lets player's store their stuff they don't want but don't want to sell, especially ships XD

still a military station should be neigh uncrushable save for large and very large fleets.

Though, you should be able to capture the station and use it as a revenue source instead of just completely annihilating it. It would be interesting mechanic because factions may struggle over one well placed station.

Should try some mod sometimes.:P

Another thing of note would be that we'll probably need sectionized damage a la Battletech before adding any station larger than a few capital ships-- We can't really expect to see the entire station to blow up by repeatedly blasting at a single section on the docking ring, right?

maybe if we hit a cargo bay filled with infernium fuel.... maybe :D speaking of that tankers should erupt into massive fiery explosions when killed by anything that would ignite a fire, IE a laser or missile.

Technically, there is no air in space, no oxygen means no fire, but I see what you're getting at.

Well there is atmosphere IN ships so there would at least be a little bit of fire before it all vented into space. also by the same note killing a dram like that shouldn't let us pillage their fuel so effectively XD

And rocket fuel by definition should be ignitable on itself. It is designed to be used in space, so it has to carry all the reaction elements it needs to release its energy. You could have it divided in two different pieces stored in seperate containers, but a tanker will still carry everything you need to make the reaction happen, and when you blow it up, it will inevitably mix. Seeing as the engines of ships in starfarer seem to release some kind of fiery gas as propellant, a big fiery explosion when blowing up tankers is completely reasonable.

In the campaign we have there are loads of Tri-Tachyon fleets who show as attacking the Hegemony orbital station--they never seem to actually do anything, but it's clear some sort of station attack/defence is going to be in there at some point. However, it's pretty critical that this doesn't happen until there are other places to buy ships or else the stations get rebuilt pretty quickly, because being unable to offload a bunch of cargo because all the stations are gone would just be annoying, especially with the upcoming consequences for going over your cargo limits!
