Learning to Sprite
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:35:02 PM »

At a very basic level. I've never used an Image program more complicated than paint before.

A friend of mine makes models; and instead of doing the *sensible* thing and asking him to try and convert them; I tried to make it from lines and starfarer parts.

His original work: http://wowandwas.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d321hw0

And my fine little mess:

Help and Hints welcome, constructive or otherwise. I have a feeling it might be in my best interest to just slowly back away form any further artistic endeavors.

The most obvious problems are the conflicting art style (Highly detailed vs minimal detail) and how 'flat' the ship looks.

The conflicting style is pretty easy to solve: use one or the other. The second, you need more brightness variation between high and low parts. Otherwise your ship looks like a, well, brick for lack of a better word. Unless that was what you were looking for.

I wanted to put in more detail to the surrounding armored sections of the hull, but figured, at least on this one, I'd better stop before I just butchered it. And I see what you mean about it being too flat as well. I'll have to see if I can't try and figure out how to make that work.

Back to work it is ^^

I usually just cut and paste existing ships.

I made the parrot from cutting up a tarsus and condor, it's about 90% of that one.

I can see what you mean about just kitbashing the parts of other sprites; and really that looks like something I could do without a lot of fuss; the issue is when I want to make something based on a specific, existing idea. Though I suppose with a little creative stretching, even that I could manage, perhaps. I'll just have to give it a swing.

G'day, I was hooked by Durendal here to help him mod the game, the payment being the game itself.
Anyway, I'm not much of a 2D artist (coder here) and I sure haven't done sprite work before, but I managed to make this 'base.'
Thing is, I'm not sure how to go about putting the detail in. I know what has to be done, but the techniques escape me.

Do you mean you know how to put in more detail but not what to put in, or do you mean you don't know how to put in more detail but know what to put in?

I mean I don't know how to put the detail in.

As I understand it sprites like this are supposed to create the illusion of lots of detail without having lots of detail. (Not to say sprites can't be detailed they can, but the ones that are really detailed appear to have even more detail than they do).

Anyway, I'm talking about things like removing solid colours, dithering, etc.

rada660: What the hell, man? You've been pimping your little modification to someone else's ship, cross-posted in like 20 threads, and you didn't even get the author correct! Your Ksi is by Erick Doe, in his thread, "New Ship Art" http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=1342.0

Stop flooding with images, and give proper credit as you're driving me nuts

Hmmm.

Well, ask me specific questions, I handle specific questions one at a time better than potentially-multiple questions.

And what program are you using?
