Before one of the 0.6.5 releases, ballistics had ammo just like missiles.  Ballistics became ammoless because CR effectively became the ammo limits.  I guess the munitions (and Odyssey since it had mini-munitions) would refill ammo, presumably at the cost of supplies, similar to how fighters worked at the time.

Before 0.6a, fighters could dock with a carrier and consume supplies (in-battle) to replenish their wings.  However, if a fighter wing was wiped out, you lost the wing permanently.  Before 0.8a, fighters were treated as ships instead of missile-like weapons that take a bay instead of a missile mount.

Also fighters were separate entity in fleet. They were not part of ship , they were separate slot, like frigates, destroyers , cruisers and battleships.

For missile reload is best way. It is missiles problem: limited ammo, my solution of that problem: just do not use missles, and no matter, i smash all what i aee without losses using just energy and ballistic weapons. It is illness of almost all games: limited missiles, why it are made so i do not understand, it is a game, make it unlimited, or reloading by some support ships, now, i just refuse to use it, no problems, annoying games stereotype. In one game there was, also, limited ballictic, okey, i installed just two lasers, and it is enaught to hunt everything, perfect game goals "use just energy weapons".

Ships with small ammo nano forges are awesome.  If ammo was a issue energy weapons would eventually be OP.

That was the point back in the day. With energy weapons being ammo-less they could become very valuable to have in a longer battle.

If youre going to put the OP missile forge on a ship you should put missiles that run out faster, like anhillators or sabots. Or harpoons.

Harpoon pods on stations are legit terrifying to destroyers and cruisers. Its a never ending storm of death that will kill anything whose flux bar gets full.

One problem with Missile Autoforge + Harpoons is that AI doesn't quite understand it has infinite missiles and still tries to conserve them. Squalls/Hurricane/Annihilators don't have this problem.

OP missile forge? I tried it, and it seems, better i'll take common paragon or at least conquest, rather than onslaught with that forge...
