A ship class with an oversized weapon?
« on: September 03, 2019, 12:33:22 AM »

I had a thought:
 - Take something with empty space in the middle, like a Falcon
 - Add a separate entity to the ship, such as an oversized built-in cannon with a revolving barrel (ultimate dakka)
 - ???
 - Conquer the Sector

Is this too ambitious or possible to implement? I know Interstellar Imperium by Dark.Revenant has something similar with the TITAN, but I'm not sure how it works and I have yet to see it in action in-game.

The "vanilla" way:
Get your favorite modding/spriting tools
Make the weapon
Add a mount to the ship and put the weapon on it, you can use the Monitor frigate or the Onslaught as a reference for how it's done

The "modded" way
As above, but use the SCY carrier as a reference

You can add modules to ships, a module has its own ship systems, hullmods, shields and guns, they are all AI controlled, you can make some really insane stuff with it, and it needs no scripting at all, check the Cathedral ship from Ship/Weapon Pack to learn how it is done.

Modules, yeah. That's what I was thinking about.

Not what I was thinking of intentionally, but having a built-in weapon would probably work better than a separate module for a "turret" that somehow has the same properties as a ship.

Built-in weapons are functionally the same as modular turrets in terms of how you make/add them.

You can name this class Monitors (which basically as class were ships with less but oversized weapons.),  or Siege ship class.
